LONDON (Reuters) - Consumer confidence unexpectedly deteriorated in May, a survey showed on Wednesday.

GfK NOP's monthly consumer confidence barometer slipped to -5 from -4 in April. Analysts had expected a steady reading of -4.

The sub-index measuring people's perception of their own finances over the next 12 months fell to +12 in May from +14 in April.

People's expectations about the outlook for the overall economy in the next 12 months were stable, with the sub-index measuring this remaining at -18.

Britons were also more reluctant to commit to making major purchases with the index measuring this falling to +8 from +11, the lowest in five months.

The captain has switched on the seatbelt sign! :D
