Commodities lead shares slide

http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,1782037,00.html

Nick Fletcher

Wednesday May 24, 2006

"The volatility in the markets continued this morning as leading shares failed to capitalise on yesterday's gains. And it was not just investors suffering - consumers had to face up to power companies saying they planned to increase household bills yet again."

"Elsewhere, though, the downward slide continued and again the main influence was commodity prices. By lunchtime the FTSE 100 index had fallen 103.6 points to 5575.1, and the 250 index of middle ranking companies was 174.8 lower at 9059.5.

Copper fell nearly 6%, while gold and oil were also traded lower in early dealings. The miners again led the falls in the FTSE 100, with Kazakhmys down more than 5%, while Antofagasta, Anglo American and BHP Billiton all lost about 4%.

Symptomatic of the nervous mood prevailing was renewed speculation that a hedge fund had got into trouble with some of its positions in the recent market turmoil."
