Why dont hybrid cars petrol/electricity have solar panels on the roof to charge the batteries when your parked up?

Plus are there any sports hybrids out that are under 20K

or they could have one of those spinny things like on the roof of white vans (wind power) to recharge.

i think you can buy a solar pannel from maplin for 9.99 which trickle charges the car battery

I would consider a hybrid but worried about the servicing costs as not all garages would be able to service it. Also as it is much more complex (two engines, etc) , there is more that could go wrong... thats always put me off... and those specialist parts probably cost a bomb too.

Flux capacitor = £3000 ?

I'm speculating here, but I think:

A. The output of the panels would be negligible with respect to the amount of current the batteries absorb.

B. Any benefit would be too small to justify cost.

There have been experiments in the sunnoer parts of the world and they did extend the range of the to car but only a little,

These cars use 30-50kw motors and solar panels just cannot cope with demand,

they do help charge the battieries if you leave it in the sun all day,

BMW have a hybrid that kicks in to give more power but not for 30mph use like Prius

peugeot and citroen could be the ones to watch, they have hybrid diesels coming out in a few user that look very well spec'ed, (We are looking at these as they could run on biodiesel)

I'm sure the Japs will not wish to be out done tho,

Because a typical car uses something like 10kW just to roll along the street at a constant 30mph, and solar panels on a typical car roof would probably produce something like 100-200W at best. So a minute of driving would take maybe an hour of charging, even ignoring charging inefficiency.

Solar power just isn't very useful unless you're powering something which doesn't use much electricity (e.g. a laptop in the Amazon) or you have a very large area to collect from. Prehistoric solar power (i.e. fossil fuels) is vastly more effective.
