The housing market's resilience this year, in which time annual inflation has picked up from 5pc to 8pc, has taken economists by surprise. Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England, said yesterday: "Relative to average earnings or incomes, or anything else you could look at, house prices do seem remarkably high."
