Hunter Rubber enters administration despite Royal seal of approval

Kevin Reed, Accountancy Age, 20 Apr 2006

ADVERTISEMENTThe wellington boot company that has the Royal seal of approval and became the height of fashion after Kate Moss wore its boots at the Glastonbury festival has entered administration.
KPMG partners have been appointed administrators of Dumfries-based Hunter Rubber, and an initial review of the company has resulted in the loss of 48 of its 112 employees.
Joint administrator Richard Fleming said: 'Regrettably, we have been compelled to make redundancies, largely in production roles. This follows an assessment of expected levels of production in the medium term.'
But hopes for the sale of the 150-year old business remain high, with more than 30 potential suitors lined up.

I bought a pair of genuine "Hunters" back in the 1980's and still wear them for the garden. My guess is that the cheap Chinese ones for 2 pounds would not last 20 years.

Shame, there's lot of old companies going under, many thought their bepoke status would save them.

Pensions sink Firmin

Apr 12 2006

The 329-year-old Birmingham firm that made Nelson's uniform buttons has been sunk by the country's growing pensions crisis.

Eleven out of 70 jobs were axed at the military buttons and badges manufacturer Firmin & Sons in Newtown Row after administrators were called in, in an attempt to salvage the business.

Left without a leg to stand on.

Not even a toe hold in the market now.

The boot is now on the other foot.

The Chinese say: "welly solly".

Workers say that the company had lost its "sole".

Unions would not toe the line.

"We were soled down the river" say workers.

Most have lost their sole means of support.

Management gets the boot.

Sock-cess proves elusive in company re-boot.
