We know that hospitals are slashing staff levels at the moment - at least another 1,000 projected losses are expected was the last I heard Littlewoods Home Shopping is relocating and consequently 500 jobs are to be lost. The best one I heard was a lady who worked as an administrator at Slumberland; she picked up a long service award for her "loyal service" at a special presentation. Later that same day she was given redundancy as her post had disappeared in a shakeup and she was not successful in her application for an alternative role. Now they are turning to massive gambling Casinos to keep things running. The NHS is not profitable so they ignore it and allow thousands of jobs to be cut. Within 3 years we will be back to pre-Maggie days with Britain about to become the "poor man of Europe" once again. HPI/MEW culture has added nothing to the national wealth as all those overpriced houses are just a matter of someone's opinion and willingness (or ability more like) to pay for them. When it all comes crashing down because of real interest rates (commensurate with the real rate of inflation and the cost of fuel) Gordon Brown's "Miracle Economy" will be seen as the biggest scam in modern history. BuyingBear Posted April 15, 2006 Share Posted April 15, 2006 (edited) It was very interesting to see the affects of the latest NHS cuts this week, our news was packed full of footage showing crying nurses with 20 years of experience.... there was no crying managers however, despite the fact they've been recruiting five administrators for each doctor or nurse over recent years. Some "Miracle Economy" when our doctor's can't afford secretaries and have to send their typing to India. How on earth could Gordon manage that huge cheesy smile on budget day? He should have hung his head low and apologised to the nation for conning so many that HPI/MEW was the path to quick riches and the end of the economic cycle (boom and bust). In truth many of them are better than a lot of the UK staff we have had. We've recently had two IT vacancies, but could only fill one with a UK IT bod, even though we held many interveiws. During this time, a contractor who works with me and applied for the job was turned down. He was spewing at the news when they told him, he couldn't understand why we would import someone from India to take the job. I couldn't tell him that he wasn't good enough. A polish researcher decided to give on of his fellow Indian researchers a bollocking for resetting the server while he was midway through a fairly hefty CFD job, despite the sign on it saying quite explicitly not to reset it. A few days later said former acquaintance's supervisor had to come have a quiet word with him. The indian researcher did not object to the bollocking in itself, but did complain that it had taken place in front of another researcher from a lower caste than himself. I actually think the NHS has had to get its act together during the last 5 or so years. Public money is being poured into a very inefficient service, and its time for it to start rationalising. As with any company that has to tighten the pursestrings, efficiency savings will mean job losses especially when it comes to balancing the books. As new equipment and new medicines are invented to cure a more and more demanding population, I'm sure we will see NI contributions rise, or privatisation. They just won't bother turning up for less than £400 cash in hand - which is a joke. Day rate is a LOT less than that, I know that much..... If he wants an easy job (indoors, nice and tidy, no mess and tea and biscuits galore and cash so it's up to him to put it through the books or not), then let me know..... (just inside M25 on A3). So I went out yesterday and had a quick look round the job agencies here in Cambridge, and at the ads in the local paper. There's lots of jobs round here - local paper still ca 12 pages of jobs per week, and lots of jobs in the agencies. The downside - the pay for office work is £6-8 per hour, which works out at about £11.5k-15k pa. Same for other sorts of jobs (production line stuff, packers, etc). Some better office jobs at £18k-20k pa. OTOH the sh!ttest nastiest studio is about £90k in a rough part of town, and a one up/one down maisonette near me is £165k. And the whole place is heaving with EEs which delights local employers. The local paper said last week that the local punting company (Scudamores) has 60 staff, 30 of them EE. Apparently the EEs turn up on time and stay back for ten minutes or so to help out and work hard, whereas the locals can't be a&rsed. No wonder. They'll be poor for the whole of their lives and have nothing to look forward to, the way things are going - and their chavtastic mates are getting pregnant and claiming housing. Meanwhile the EEs live in HMOs for a few years, driving up the cost of housing and insulating BTLers from their folly, save like mad and go home and buy a house/business/farm. Only maybe they'll get home and find their housing stock has been ramped out of reach by Brits in rented accommodation buying up their housing stock to get on the ladder by whatever means possible - now that'd be richly ironic. I've been there for over eight years and in the last couple of years it's been absolutely manic - more work than we could handle. Then, six months ago, it just stopped dead. Of our two competitors, one is laying staff off and the other is up for sale. The equipment we sell (and I maintain) costs 100k to 3 million each.
