I know somebody who has bought in that area recently, but their house hasn't shown up yet. That one naturally jumped out at me!

I'm almost a weegie, that is where my (FTB) flat is likely to be. :)

surely it should still have a value?

if gifted what happens if the person giving it as a gift croaks it before 7 years is up? do they just take the value there and then?

Not sure. The register kept by the LR might mention the price paid the last time it changed hands in a commercial transaction. It occurs to me that could be relatively low especially if mum and dad bought the place twenty odd years ago.

With regard to the seven years question, possibly the house would have to be valued, after the death of the donor(s).

Sorry I can't be more definite. Residential conveyancing and probate not my field.

Think this is fairly standard when the house is transferred as a gift. Usually between family members, parents to children etc

Yes, it's just the old fashioned legal phrase used when something is given for nothing financial in return.

They just value it retrospectively - it's done all the time for capital gains tax purposes
