IF

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you

But make allowance for their doubting too,

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,

If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

If all men count with you, but none too much,

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

So does RichM, don't mean he ain't being soppy though... :D

I love Kipling's works btw. Shame he was such a racist however...

Well, we're all racist in our own ways. I don't like honkys, personally. They're all boring and emotionally repressed.

It's not me being soppy. If you want to see being soppy search the offtopic forum for my thread on "the joy of watching ponies grazing in the meadow".

No, like my quote from Henry V yesterday, I am keen to encourage people to stiffen their resolve. Too many gone yellow lately. And I don't mean that in a racist way ;)

Mr Kipling bakes exceedingly good cakes :huh:

Mr. Kipling makes exceedingly large amounts of money (one for the "Goodies" fans out there).

If you can keep your house when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all shout at you

But make allowances for their shouting too,

If you can rent and not grow tired of renting,

Or being cried about, don't deal in cries,

Or feeling spent, don't give way to spending,

And yet don't believe the spin from the VI's.

If you can quote- and not make quotes your master

If you can link- and not make links your aim

If you can post with Brainclamp and Webmaster

And treat those two dim posters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the house price figures

Twisted by Rightmove to make a trap for fools

Yet watch the news for economic triggers

And keep an eye on where to find good schools.

If you can make a heap of all your earnings

And risk it all on one STR

And not give in to all your yearnings

To blow it all on that new car;

If you can force your wife and kids and in-laws

To believe your marbles have not gone

And so rent on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to you "Rent on!"

If you can talk with EAs and keep you virtue

Or post with Bubb -nor lose the common touch

If neither Charlie nor ImupNorth can hurt you

If Fred can post with you (but not too much!)

If you can avoid the unforgiving mortgage

Of 160 grands worth of ethereal fun

Yours is a home and everything that's in it

And- which is more- you'll be a Bear, my son.

That is quality. Nice one.
