Columbo Report post Posted March 23, 2006 What is the biggest problem facing humanity right now? Answer = Fossil fuel shortage. It is already so bad that in order to achieve growth we must cook the books. What is the only compromise to this problem? Answer = collapse demand for consumption across the westernised world whilst keeping everyone under the spell of normalcy. This is very easy to do when the population is in so much debt that it doesn't know what day it is. Crash, forclose and destroy most of the consumption economy. The way I see it is there is still vast amounts of oil left to feed the basic needs for many decades to come IF everyone that is not directly involved in agriculture and food processing (who make up say 40% - 50% population ?) stays at home. Since there is plenty of capacity to meet basic needs the state can hand out social security checks (barely more than meal tickets and basic housing) without printing and causing hyperinflation. Another depression will avert total societal meltdown and buy many more precious years. A reasonable theory or a load of hogwash?
