Up to 500 rivals' boards were taken down overnight

Sunday June 20, 2004

The Observer

Some well-known scams include: · Board wars: Foxtons, one of several London agents fined for 'fly-boarding', had to apologise after erecting a board outside the home of Alastair Campbell recently. Last year, Foxtons faced a Scotland Yard investigation after admitting contracting special teams to illegally rip down rivals' signs on a massive scale in an attempt to increase its share of the lucrative London market. Up to 500 signs a week were removed under cover of darkness.

I'm waiting with baited breath.

Does anyone know if anything similar happened in the run up to the last crash? I mean media changing sentiment by 'outing' the scams?

It's all very well saying it's not company policy, it's waywood staff and all that, but these things do start to make foxtons look the complete opposite of the image they are trying to portray.

If the business model tends to lead to dodgy staff then perhaps the business model needs to be changed. Personally I think it could well be that dodgy stuff is all company policy apart from they don't put it in black and white in the procedures handbook.

My mate's ex worked for KFH in London. They actually employed at least one bloke just to spend all his time going round removing rivals' boards, and putting up KFH boards outside places that weren't even for sale. It works well in London because there are so many houses converted into flats containing people who never talk to each other... so each would just think it was one of the others who's flat was up for sale.
