Bear Stearns warns against airline stocks due to 'imminent' bird flu

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard (Filed: 21/03/2006)

Investment bank Bear Stearns has advised investors to start dumping airline and retail stocks in favour of blue-chip utilities as a hedge against bird flu, warning that a full human pandemic of the H5N1 virus could set off the worst global stock market crash since the 1930s.
In the first detailed study of its kind, the US bank suggests buying Scottish Power, biotech companies such as Amgen and Medimmune, and the US health group St Jude Medical Inc, citing them as the sort of companies that would hold up well or even rise in the first phase of a pandemic.
Mr Harmstone said there could be a waterfall effect in the final phase of a pandemic where almost all stocks plunge together. "Once it goes global, investors may have to look at an outright short strategy," he said.
Bear Stearns said
insurance companies with "longevity risk" through pension and annuity exposure could benefit as fatality rates jumped.

Few people are taking Bird flu seriously--until recently. This is a big and dangerous wild card and it will trump IR, Yen Carry Trade implications, and just about any other economic factor out there.

Bird flu God's wrath: rabbi

From correspondents in Jerusalem

March 21, 2006

AN outbreak of deadly bird flu in Israel is God's punishment for calls in election ads to legalise gay marriages, according to Rabbi David Basri, a prominent sage preaching Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism.
"The Bible says that God punishes depravity first through plagues against animals and then in people," Rabbi Basri said in a religious edict quoted by his son.
Rabbi Basri said he hoped the deaths of hundreds of thousands of turkeys and chickens would help atone for what he called the sins of left-wing Israeli political parties, the son, Rabbi Yitzhak Basri, said, a week before a national election.
The bird flu outbreak stemmed from far-left political parties "strengthening and encouraging homosexuality," Rabbi Basri's son quoted him as saying.
One of the parties aired an election commercial depicting two brides kissing. Some campaign advertisements also called for homosexual marriages to be legalised in Israel.
Rabbi Basri is a prominent Kabbalist and author of commentaries on the Zohar, the main Kabbalah mystical text.

Hmmm, BSE attacked the animals now its Bird Flu that may be within days or weeks of mutating to attack people? Makes you wonder doesn't it. :o

:):D:lol::lol::lol:

I am wondering whether to book a flight to the States now or wait for the "Bird flu sale." With Wall Street issuing advisories to investors to cover their positions in anticipation of some economic rumbles it is getting a little more serious.

So Blair can say that having screwed the economy that it’s not his fault it’s all gone tits up but it that H5N1.

Well Blair can you tell me how the hell all that personal debt will help people survive the coming crisis and if lots are killed then can I retire before being 90 as you have all them years of NI contributions that the bearers will not be able to collect.

When soceity falls and people are killing each other for a loaf of bread, those MEW jockeys will be damn pleased they bought the biggest 4x4 on the block.

No, I'm not serious.

But if it all can be blamed on bird flu, then the next time there's a house price bubble, this one will be discounted as a precedent because bird flu was a special circumstance that prevented prices rising forever.
