Smiths Group to cut 500 in Mexico move

By Christopher Hope (Filed: 21/03/2006)

Smiths Group, the aerospace and engineering business, has become the latest British manufacturer to "off-shore" labour to cheaper economies in the developing world.
The company said it plans to cut more than 500 manufacturing jobs from its Hythe operations in Kent and transfer the work to Mexico.
Staff at the subsidiary Smiths Medical International were told yesterday that manufacturing at the Hythe centre would end within two years.
Martin Jamieson, Smiths Medical International's managing director, said:
"Our competitors have all made similar moves, which makes today's announcement unavoidable
. We are sorry this will affect many employees and their families but are pleased Hythe will still offer employment …to more than 200 in some key functions."

Another 200 homes or so on the market unless replacement jobs can be found and the artcile says all the competitors are doing the same thing! :o
