Its pretty good now. I live in one of the high resolution coverage areas, and can zoom in on the house, see cars in the drive etc. Trouble is, this is exactly the type of tool Prescott wants to use to spy on us and increase our council tax for having:

Garden shed/pond/too large decking area/excessive garden chairs*

A better idea for NuLabour would be to make LCD/Plasma TVs mandatory for all rooms (except the kazi perhaps) and simply have a two way system going. The government could then make sure residents were not conspiring to cheat on taxes, housing extra residents, looking at the wrong things on the internet and so forth.

The great outdoors could indeed be covered by high resolution satellite cameras. If everyone is tagged they would know if people on the sausage were working etc, the potential is endless. A good start would be to issue a "smart ID card" with relevant data so that people have to produce it to police for a scan or when buying and selling to keep a track on the movement of money.

Seems that someone wrote a book on this subject awhile back? Orwell spring to mind?

NuLabour is becoming synomous with NuNationalSocialist IMHO. Too many yhears in power has gone to their heads. The Americans had a good idea when they imposed term limits on politicians--8 years and then its on yer bike.

The sad thing is that a sizeable proportion of the UK population would welcome such moves

How friggin right you are!

I have finally convinced my wife of the massive implications in voting Labour, be new or old Labour

When push comes to shove they have an agenda to rule without reply and if the rules need changing, change them.

I can get a whole range of information on my desktop at work including high res images taken in both 1999 and 2003. I know our planning dept use them to compare areas to check for unauthorised buildings. It is aerial photography though, not satellite.

To be efficient the process would have to be automated beyond current technology. However, such technologies are coming, one of the scariest is the widespread use of facial recognition software coupled with cctv cameras. I think it is Erith in Kent that has installed it to keep undesirables of the high street. Tip of the iceberg stuff...
