Luton

Recommended Posts

Luton is the type of place where house prices get pushed up high in a boom but nobody would even consider approaching in a recession. Any information on prices in what is unofficially Britain's worst town?

I was bought up in Luton, and can confirm its status of 'the town that god forgot'.

I live in Hitchin, 10 miles up the road from it now, and by comparison, Luton house prices are a steal - a look on RM turns up lots in Luton at bargain prices - probably 40%+ lower than where I am, obviously dependant on area (believe it or not, there are 'posh' bits in luton)

However, I remember a top tip from Viz:

"Avoid misery and possible suicide my moving away from Luton, Bedfordshire"

It puts 40% into perspective ....

In fairness to Luton it is very well situated for employment, with London, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes all easily commutable. Its the cheap end of an expensive area.

Luton is an outpost of London. Its declining local employment base (Vauxhall factory?) makes it more and more of a commuter town. It is cheap in comparison to surrounding towns but it is hardly a FTB paradise.
