Labour Mps' Property Empires

Recommended Posts

http://politics.guardian.co.uk/comment/sto...1721469,00.html

"... the Labour party's regular pronouncements on the shortage of affordable housing need be no obstacle to any Labour MP or life peer inclined to exploit or contribute to that shortage. If education, education, education has become, of late, a somewhat implausible rallying cry, location, location, location remains, among Labour politicians as much as estate agents, an unalterable law."

Chris Huhne, likely to be the new Lib Dem leader, owns 9 homes

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,17...2055855,00.html

Champagne socialists like these are the lowest of the low in politics, IMO, because they are hypocrites in the purest sense.

What they espouse is NOT how they conduct their own financial affairs.

At least the Tories are honest about being selfish.

They [the MPs] are ALL at it!!!! There are loads and loads of MPs - mnay "NU Labour" - who have extensive property "portflios". What with their MASSIVELY generous allowances and salaries and all the other perks -- it's a perfect way for them to MILK the system and just pile in there whilst others have nothing. I have repeatedly said -- this is a VERY good subject for an aspiring journalist.....

It would be nice to see an HPC wipe many of these fools out of the system.

I wonder how many of them just own many houses outright, and how many are highly geared to the market after being tempted by earlier success and greed.

Agitprop comedian Mark Thomas did a programme on this a year or two back, with a particular emphasis on Michael Meacher's property empire. It was quite good. I particularly enjoyed the juxtaposition of what Meacher said when he was a young left wing firebrand and what he's up to now he's a middle aged capitalist pig. I don't find Thomas that funny, but he's a muck raker par exellence.

There are 97 instances of the word rental in the November 2005 Register of Members' Interests.

I can't really be bothered checking the document thoroughly, & in many cases there are several instances for one member and several properties for one instance.

Please feel free to run through it youselves:

Ok, own up, who here voted for these people?

This is a very serious issue that we rarely hear about in the press. I know most people are too busy watching big brother to care about this, but HOW CAN MP'S MAKE IMPARTIAL DECISIONS WHEN IT COMES TO THE HOUSING MARKET WHEN THEY COULD BE FINANCIALLY RUINED BY A MARKET CRASH?

This is akin to Richard Pennant* having a vote on the abolition of slavery, and any self-respecting MP with a property portfolio should either sell their properties or resign IMO.

*1777-1780

Richard Pennant was Liverpool's M.P. He owned 8,000 acres of sugar plantations and over 600 slaves in Jamaica. He was re-elected again in 1784-1790.

Its amazing some MPs have the time to serve their constituents at all based on that list.

Look at Tony Baldry, MP for Banbury - 13 non executive directorships amongst other interests. :o He must be taking the piss.

Plus you only have to declare an interest if it is worth £60,000 or more. So when they say 'nil', they actually mean no single interest exceeds £60k

EDIT: My goodness, William Hague's entry has me speechless!

It would be fun to pick a few of these apart. Some people don't seem to have got any goodies out of being a politician. That hardly seems fair, it would be nice to check up & see if they've missed anything.

To think a younger and more naive Blair was cacking his boots over the Bernie Eccleston affair, now they realise they can get away with anything, I only hope a government with nothing but contempt for the people does something very courageous like reform local taxation... that always goes down well as a last kicker.

It's hardly surprising they're reluctant to tax BTL'ers is it?

BTLers are taxed exactly the same way any other investment is. The Govt can't legislate against specific assets within a group, for example extra tax for peopel who own shares in tobacco companies?

They can tax smokers no problem.

[Edit] Just to clarify that statement, I personally believe first time buyers should be protected in the same way European manufacturers are protected from Chinese textile producers. Europe can't compete with China on cost, so the EU puts quotas on imports.

Simple.

Its amazing some MPs have the time to serve their constituents at all based on that list.

I've always thought that MP's work outside Parliament was not really on. Any job that they do must either be:

in their constituents' interests, in which case they're already being paid for it;

against their constituents' interests, in which case, why are they doing it;

essentially neutral with regard to their constituents' interests, in which case, why are they doing it, because there are a lot of other things which they could do for their constituents.

Peter.

You are missing the point.

Yes they can tax smokers, and do. What they can't do is tax people who own tobacco company shares differently from any other shares Similarly, you can't tax BTL owners diferently from other businesses.

Can we do our own report on MPs property interests?

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/c...gmem/regmem.pdf

The notes regarding property interests are as follows:

8. Land and property

The requirement in this section is to register land or property worth,

currently, more than £59,000 (other than any home used for the personal

residential purposes of the Member or the Member's spouse or partner) or

from which in aggregate an income in excess of £5,900 is derived.

If we have a team effort, it won't take much time.

I'll do A-C.

Can people take on other parts of the directory? D-F, etc etc

I guess all we want is name and property exposure, e.g.

CARSWELL, Douglas (Harwich)

Residential property in Hertfordshire, from which rental income is received.

Any others up for this? I assume they are only required to list property other than their main place of residence.

Of course they can. Ever heard of stamp duty or council tax? There are endless ways the government could tax second, third homes etc.

What's missing is the political will to swing property ownership in favour of first time buyers, and this is not helped by the fact that so many MPs (and journalists) have their own mini property empires.

Or how about taxing 'flippers' like they've done in China.

http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/property/...GHAIMARCH2.html

Beijing also levied a 5 per cent tax on the sale price of homes sold before two years of ownership. "It's killed the speculators," said David Pitcher, a Shanghai developer and former head of CB Richard Ellis's office.

It's not exactly rocket science.

I counted 144, but I probably miscounted by a few.

one crucial name is missing - Gordon Brown. I don't think Gordon is in politics for money - he is all about the power and glory.

I doubt BTL sits comfortably with his Presbyterian upbringing and socialist values. I suspect he would take great pleasure in flushing this lot out (esp. that guy who owns 2 flats in Bristol and a house in London - Tony someone, I think). ;)

OK, I make 141 MPs that have property and land interests.

Roughly a quarter. Plus, what is not revealed is how many (a large number I suspect) who are owner occupiers, as well as owners of rental property and other holdings. Being an OO is a fairly large interest to have I guess, since you could have "made" several hundreds of thousands of pounds in the last few years.

RichM Your list is quite extraordinary.

What has not been mentioned is how many of these parasites are claiming housing allowances for their time spent at Westminster. It was only a couple of years ago this row blew up. I seem to remember the Speaker, Glasgow kiss Michael Martin being exposed as the worst piss taker out of the whole system. Not only did he have a grace and favour apartment at Westminster, he also had a rental property in London and a house back in bonny Scotland.

The sheer arrogance of these politicians milking the system is breath taking. Whilst they pass laws telling us how to behave and confirm, tax us to the hilt, they quite happily abuse the expenses system openly and get away with it.

Bring on the revolution!
