Retail employment hits 23-year low

28/02/2006

A poor retail climate has contributed to the
sector’s sharpest fall in employment in 23 years
, according to new data.
February figures from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) show that last year’s downturn has contributed to the biggest decline in jobs in the 23-year history of its quarterly distributive trades survey.

Staggering statistics indeed! Everything is happening rapidly and it cannot be long before house prices react more violently to the downturn in the economic cycle. Anecdotally, I saw 6 closed/closing shops in Evesham's small enclosed shopping precinct this morning--there are a total of about 20 in the precinct.

Does anybody have any idea what percentage of the workforce are employed in retail? As far as I can see, we have become a "country not making anything" pretty much. I think some of these retailers work on very narrow margins - if there is a downturn, how many job loses are we looking at, considering retail seems to be the only thing supporting the economy?

Here's a link to an eu thing. It needs some mining but there are definately UK stats by sector in there.

'Retail Key Facts':

http://www.brc.org.uk/LatestData.asp?iCat=...ETAIL+KEY+FACTS

  • The retail industry employed 2.9 million people, as at the end of September 2005. This equates to 1 in 9 (11%) of the total UK workforce.
  • Over the last five years, employment in retailing has grown by 300,000.
