Not Just Unskilled Workers Coming In.

I don't understand this. In a country with millions unemployed I'm sure we can find almost all the talent we need within our shores. Perhaps if employers didn't demand three years experience for a cleaning job then they could get who they wanted.

Good point FTB - most jobs that don't require specific technical skills you can pick up within a couple of months. Also wonder how much b*llsh1t there is on these peoples' CVs; after all, how are you going to check their references? Probably find there's an agency back home with a couple of guys in an office with phones and a filing cabinet full of CVs taking calls from UK employers/agencies;

"ah yes, so you're offering Stanislav a job? Let me just check his file...yes, he worked in our logistics department for three years, and is fully skilled in..."

Or am I just too cynical?

Three-quarters of those surveyed said that they were also responding to these difficulties by developing their existing employees. Half are also offering increased training as part of the recruitment package.

Wow - what shocking innovation!

Evidently the skills fairy isn't visiting enough Brits, so Eastern Europeans have to be brought in.

I despair for this country sometimes.....

It's willpower that's being imported, not manpower.

In my experience as an employer, there are too many Brits who can't manage simple tasks such as getting to work on time or picking up the phone to explain why they won't be in when they're ill.

If foreign workers are any better, I don't blame companies for taking them on. It's nothing to do with lowering pay.

the same in my experience. been working with some Polish girls recently and they put SOME Brit girls to shame...........

they turn up early...not late and hungover........are not looking for the next tea/cigarette break and kind of count their blessings to be working and earning ok money..........unlike some of the Brits i work with who only ever moan and work at snails pace..........

of course a massive generalization here as based on small sample.

The trouble is some people, skilled or not are to put it frankly 'lazy' they want everything for nothing. They don't appreciate what they do have, and are not interested in putting in extra work to better themselves.

What you do today, and the effort you put in will pay dividends to you in the future.

'You don't get owt for nowt' ;)

It’s obvious really – employers are employing from abroad because the cites are full of uneducated foreigners and all the educated British people have moved out to live in the country where the quality of life is better. They just have no choice in my opinion

totally agree with you. there was a post on here from a guy who gave up an evening job because it impacted on his day job - don't want to highlight him b/c do not know his personal circumstances - BUT that is his CHOICE. SOME choose to work 2 jobs , do OT etc, work weekends. Not saying it is good for long term quality living........but even at 40 i often work weekends b/c i want a certain standard of living and being freelance never know when the work could dry up.............

A lot of the Eastern Europeans are cleaning up in the Uk by working hard . both day/eve AND weekends that they do not mind paying cheap rent to live 2 per room in crowded house. to them it is not for ever........

i have met dozen or so thru work recently and suprised how well they are doing. I had a "not in my backyard" kind of mentality to them until recently ashamed to admit, but since had some move in as neighbours my views are changing....good luck to them............

it has nothing to do with better/harder working foriegners

The truth is they polish girls are on the same wages as doctors are in there home country for sweeping stairs and cleaning glasses.

now if you took your average so called lazy brit and gave him doctors wages comparable to his out-goings he would turn up on time to.

the truth is 170 pounds take home wages most of these polish workers are on doesint cut it for your average brit, it would hardly pay for the roof over his head.

if poland was so great and such hard workers then why is there economy in the toilet ?

simple reason is in poland there working on low wages like disponded brits here.

This is true - if you are prepared to travel to another country to work you are likely to want to work hard for a short time, be prepared to live in squalor before moving back to your homeland. Also, the British work longer hours than most countries.

Exactly. What's the point in working hard in the UK when doing so won't improve your standard of living? It's not as though working two jobs would allow you to save enough in a couple of years to buy a house, as it would for many immigrants returning to their home countries.

Relative to incomes, an Eastern European coming to the UK and sending home a thousand pounds a month is equivalent to someone from the UK being able to save about five thousand a month: how 'lazy' do you think British people would turn out to be if there was another European country we could move to and send home five thousand a month from doing menial jobs?

The simple fact is that our cost of living is one of the highest in the world and our wages are nowhere near high enough to compensate for it. That leads to demoralisation and low productivity.

The solution is simple: eventually a trend will start whereby UK citizens work in the UK, save as much as they can, transfer it to a Euro savings account, and retire to a great life in poland/bulgaria/ wherever.

Combined with Poles etc. doing the same, we will reach an equilibrium between UK/E. Europe.

Look at as a preview of the main event to come: the great global levelling (credit to DrBubb).

I once worked for a crap UK company. The IT was so rubbish a letter awarding a payrise to a collegue of mine (same role, two years more experience and more reponsibilities) had been saved in my file area on the network. They'd awarded a whopping 1k more than me, who was new so only had a few tasks to occupy my time!

Work hard, slap in the face. That's the UK.

A lot of the Eastern Europeans are cleaning up in the Uk by working hard . both day/eve AND weekends that they do not mind paying cheap rent to live 2 per room in crowded house. to them it is not for ever........

But it would be for a McJob brit working two jobs. How to they improve their lot? Go to evening classes at 3am, clean more bogs per hour? How?

It's OK for Blair to let them in to bring our wages down but don't you think it's time that our MP's had the same treatment ?

Lets have more black MP's mr Blair

In Scotland a few years back the Scottish Socialist candidiates for the Scottish Parliament said they'd take the average scottish wage and no more.

Seemed the market didn't respond to this bold offer to undercut the competition as they didn't get many seats.

Doubt you'll get much joy from retraining - there's already an oversupply of qualified people in practically every area you can think of, particularly those you can learn through evening classes.

And if you look around you'll find that the variety of evening classes has diminished. Vast majority are now languages, arts, etc. Last year in Cambridgeshire NOT ONE college offered A2 maths through evening classes; yet it's essential for almost every technical subject. And for all the stuff about a need for more foreign-language speakers, from what I've seen in secretarial/admin jobs bilinguality gets you b*gg*r all by way of extra pay - just lots of lip-service from the CBI et al.

You are right about the languages and other useful business skills. My wife is trilingual and has pretty good German too. Many companies with the slightest international scope use languages as a mere CV filter, so you get 15-16k clerical jobs required two additional languages - there'll always be a continential european or ten or underemployed language graduate around.

Once in the job, of course, you can use english exclusively.

Be suspicious of CBI claims of skills shortgages requiring more overseas workers when so many people are overskilled for thier stamp-licker jobs. What 'business leaders' want is ever-cheaper sources of labour.

I watched a film last night called Matewan based on a true story about american coal miners in 1920`s

Virginia, where the mining company brought in black labourers to undermine the coal miners and cut wages.

They unionised with the immigrants against the company and had a cowboy style shoot out.

Another film I watched this week called Hoffa based on a true story on Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters union in America where the workers would fight it out with clubs and fists with strike breakers.

The thing that stood out was that workers in the past were prepared to fight and die for their right to a decent job and wage whereas nowadays people are scared of their own shadows and too ignorant of politics, history

and economics to know they are sleep walking back into Victorian times living and working conditions.

Arthur Sargill with tales of missing NUM money all proven to be false in court.
