New-build flats are destroyed in arson attack

A BLOCK of flats under construction was razed to the ground in an arson attack today

Fire broke out at the three-storey timber structure in Thistle Street, Galashiels, at about 2am.

The building was completely engulfed by the blaze, which took firefighters four hours to extinguish. Seven crews, including specialist appliances, were called to the incident to help bring the fire under control.

Twelve neighbouring houses suffered radiated damage because of the heat's intensity, a fire service spokeswoman said. She confirmed the incident was being investigated as a "deliberate ignition".

A police spokesman appealed for any witnesses who saw anything in the Thistle Street area at around 2am to contact Galashiels or Hawick police stations.

Is it me or does there seem to be more suspicous fires happen lately around the country?

Yeah, this is completely crazy! Will no doubt be bought up by a bunch of 'Up The Nanny State' NIMBYs who immediately start complaining about the noise, despite the fact that the circuit was there first

Surely you're not suggesting it might have had something to do with the owner? Or owners of a nearby block of flats, sorry, luxury apartments. Tsk Tsk! Coincidence I'm sure.

The most profitable way of disposing of property that won't sell is to torch it. Plenty of professionals out there who will do the job for 5 K or thereabouts. Not traceable.

For f*cks sake u can hire a perfectly competent hitman for less than that.

Let's not be f*ckwits about this. We will be seeing a lot of newbuilds going up in flames in the next few years.

What's amazing is the fact it's an old RAF camp and there is sweet FA around it for miles, why bother consuming parts of the circuit when there are rows of empty fields all around with a series of nice dual carriageways for easy access? I like the business park they're building near the track, at least that's related to the sport and they've bulldozeds lots of nice fields, rather than the track itself :)

The real problem will indeed be the new owners of the £300k shoeboxes, they will start complaining about noise and will demand that "something be done about it"! It's still an active airfield too so they will be bitching about low flying helicopters. You know it's true.

Why not just dump the houses in an empty field a mile away? If they'd like someone to help bulldoze the site I'd be quite happy to volunteer, provided I can take out some NIMBY protestors in the process
