New Year gloom for high street

The average weekly value of sales in January was £4.4 billion, the same as it was in January last year.
This represents the lowest annual growth for the month since records began
, the Office for National Statistics said today in its latest retail report.

Retail sales and employment statistics are inexorably entwined. It is difficult to see how the VIs and EAs are so upbeat about house prices rising when the economy is going in the opposite direction. Could they be guilty of over-optimism? :)
