A FEW years ago the Journal of Economic Psychology carried some interesting research about the link between song lyrics in the Top 40 and the economy. Gloomy lyrics heralded a downturn, and vice versa.

Coldplay, Keane, James Blunt, Muse, Will Young,

Depeche Mode, Kaiser Chiefs.

The message appears to be that after struggling for most of 2005 but perking up in the final few weeks, spending is struggling again. And the question is whether this is just a mood thing or whether something more fundamental is happening.

I recall reading that the popularity of the colour pink is also an indicator of future market direction. Apparently pink becomes a popular colour when the economy is near a peak.

I'm certainly no fashion expert but there was plenty of pink around last year. Females everywhere and quite a few males on a Saturday night wearing pink too. A few enquiries with a 19 y.o. that I know revealed that pink was the "in" colour with the blokes at clubs etc for a while last year "but it's out now".

Hmm...

There's something to be said for this! Bands like Oasis, The Verve & Pulp emerged from the early 90's squalour and resonated strongly with the disaffected young generation. Something about a recession and unemployment which gets the songwriting juices flowing.

Off to find my copy of "A Northern Soul"...

HOW SOON IS NOW ?

(alternative lyrics)

I am the son

And a first-time buyer

Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar

I am saving a sum

Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth

How can you say

I go about things the wrong way ?

I am Human and I need to owe a house

Just like everybody else does

I’ve saved a bundle

and I’ll make an offer

Of a price that is criminally vulgar

I am only offering

Oh below 30% of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth

How can you say

I won’t buy a house that way ?

I am not stupid and I’m not getting stitched-up

Just like everybody else does

There's a web-site, if you'd like to go

You could see where house prices are going to

So you go, and you can’t believe your eyes

And you try to troll

And you get nowhere, you log off, and you cry

And you want to die

When you say it's not gonna happen "now"

Well, when exactly do you mean ?

See I've already waited too long

And I’m seeing it happen

You shut your mouth

How can you say

House price won’t crash anyway?

I am seeing prices drop day-to-day

Just like everybody else does.

1985 from the Meat is Murder LP.

Im such an anorak I think I'll post the lyrics

I am the son

And the heir

Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar

I am the son and heir

Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth

How can you say

I go about things the wrong way?

I am human and I need to be loved

Just like everybody else does

I am the son

And the heir

Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar

I am the son and heir

Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth

How can you say

I go about things the wrong way?

I am human and I need to be loved

Just like everybody else does

There's a club if you'd like to go

You could meet somebody who really loves you

So you go and you stand on your own

And you leave on your own

And you go home and you cry

And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen "now"

Well when exactly do you mean?

See I've already waited too long

And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth

How can you say

I go about things the wrong way?

I am human and I need to be loved

Just like everybody else does

Hmm...

There has been a proliferation of pink mobile phones of late.

I was told that Pink was definitely the "in" colour for men a few months ago.

Plus we have Pink in the charts (bring on the recession I say!)

i can be that anorak. you're 5 years late. how soon is now was released on rough trade feb 1985.

this doesn't in any way detract from your point, and the point of this thread. music/lyrics have frequently been at apparent odds to the perceived social situation of the current times, and have subsequently been accepted as almost prophetic. think back to punk and the subsequent winter of discontent.

Gordon Brown was wearing a pink tie on the BBC this morning. Maybe he is just wishing it was still in!!??

Smiths got nothing on these boys...

Walk in silence,

Don't walk away, in silence.

See the danger,

Always danger,

Endless talking,

Life rebuilding,

Don't walk away.

Walk in silence,

Don't turn away, in silence.

Your confusion,

My illusion,

Worn like a mask of self-hate,

Confronts and then dies.

Don't walk away.

People like you find it easy,

Naked to see,

Walking on air.

Hunting by the rivers,

Through the streets,

Every corner abandoned too soon,

Set down with due care.

Don't walk away, in silence,

Don't walk away.

Hmmm indeed. Mrs khali has been pointing out newsreaders and various other talking heads on the TV sporting pink ties, shirts etc over the last year. Her lad's even brave enough to wear one in our rough neighbourhood, much to our suprise.

Quite amazing how such bizarre, ingrained and stupid opinions such as "but pinks's a poof's colour" can be overturned by the subtle, creeping media.

Now, who controls the media and what other ****** are they feeding us? Who can claim immunity from the influence of the media? We may question, but do we question all of it? And if we do, who do we then trust? And if we trust no-one, what are our lives worth?

What do I know? nowt.

... and now the HPC version of that Joy Division classic:

Buy in silence,

Don't pay too much, in silence.

See the danger,

Always danger,

Endless MEWING,

Life remortgaging,

Don't pay too much.

Buy in silence,

Don't pay too much, in silence.

Your mortgage,

My Spanish villa,

Worn like a mask of self-hate,

Defaults and then dies.

Don't pay too much.

People like you find it easy,

Money to spend,

Living on cards.

Hunting in the sales,

On the high streets,

Every card abandoned too soon,

Cut up with due care.

Don't pay too much, in silence,

Don't pay too much.

Aahh yes. Joy Division. Never was a fan, but credit due where credit's due.

Right Freds Dead should also note this if s/he's reading. When you use/adapt other peoples lyrics in your posts and signature, please make sure you credit the author. :)
