The Mail is a mixed bag in terms of reporting and those who never read it and use generalisations to smear all those who visit the site are very ignorant of not only the broad range of views but also its power. It is very popular in the UK because it is free. It is also one of the few sites that represents the center right viewpoint that has dominated UK politics pretty much forever. People here and on the Guardian seem to forget that outside of London and Brighton, most people are small c conservative and detest the BBC/Guardian type thinking. The Mail has writers who are dead center, and those who on the right, like Peter Hitchens. Their editor in chief is very much of the center. If you never visit the Mail, then you you will never understand what other people are thinking. There is lots of tabloid trash stories, but some reasonable analysis as well. It is the lower middle class yardstick of public opinion, just like the Sun/mirror are working class, and the Telegraph/Times/Guardian are middle class yardsticks.

I look at most newspaper websites....subscribe to the Telegraph, but visit the BBC, Guardian and Mail. That way you get a better viewpoint. The comments sections are often the best bits, especially the Daily Telegraph, and I would be very surprised if senior Tory politicians didn’t have underlings reporting back on the most up liked comments on some articles. It is, as others have pointed out, a cheap way of doing focus groups.4803E1AD-9E88-4520-97FC-59F429899035.jpeg

Rubbish.  The only reason the DM places the apparently lefty-conflicting story is so they can point out further up the track how right they were. The paper sees its place in the UK world as being a right wing influencer.  It does this by using lots of 'look over there'  stories about how ''unemployed with 6 kids in a big house, eating YOUR tax'' .  As for the telegraph you subscribe to, it employed Boris for £250kpa for writing a worthless column which was nothing but scathing of the EU.

Bad covid outcome is because we have the right wing nut job government that the Daily mail (and acomplices) told everyone to vote for

Brexit, thanks again Daily mail (and Express, Sun, Times, Telegraph) for filling the idiot end of the populations heads with lies and exaggerations while at the same time not mentioning the yet to be fully apparent hidden agenda.

You need to get out more if you think that. There are significant enclaves of BBC (which many complain is right wing now, so I'm not sure what you are saying) and Guardian reading people all over, even in 'the North', and you are discounting an entire country, a Scotland.

The Guardian newspaper, founded in Manchester in 1821 and published as The Manchester Guardian until 1959.

Pig sh*    t.  What do you want? Trump? Hitler?  We have a full on corrupt, crony capitalist, vested interest in charge of the trough. ie a typical right wing government and no Brexit was a total heist by the extreme right wing of the Tory party so they can get on with their money laundering and crapping on the poorest behind closed doors.   you know this.

Would that be the same Manchester Guardian which was founded by John Edward Taylor who made his money in the cotton trade which used slave labour. And the same paper which backed the Confederacy in the US civil war?

If we are giving a history lesson that is.

Perhaps - but if you as a paper and through your columnists promote the case for the descendants and beneficiaries of slavery to pay reparations perhaps one might suggest you begin at home?

The paper had a very liberal outlook, back in the day. Many on the left would argue that it still does.

And while we're talking reparations, let's not forget the millions of First Natives slaughtered or made homeless by the colonial butchers in pursuit of their 'manifest destiny.'

You are the problem. Yours and the millions like you who have complete intolerance of all views that don’t align with yours is the source of so much ill today. It is (collective) you and your arrogance that pushed so many from the centre and created Trump. Your conceit that only you are able to think correctly and that anyone who deviates from that position is a “Mail reading idiot”. In my life I have adopted positions both left and right on different issues, but you...you are incapable of nuance, empathy or reasoned thinking. You are the disease at the heart of our society that was once tolerant and pleasant. You will reap the whirlwind you sow.

It also broke the biggest sports scandal in recent years.  I suspect that if the RFU were run by guardian readers Saracens would not have been relegated.  Saracens could have just said to other Rugby Clubs, "Do you believe the Daily Fail?".

Then the RFU would have said, "Of course not, sorry".

Depressingly the wikipedia article on the scandal doesn't mention the paper that first reported it.  How meanspirited is that?
