£3bn green home grants scheme faltering just weeks after launch

"The government’s plan to insulate England’s draughty homes is faltering because builders and installers are failing to sign up, leaving thousands of households unable to access the £3bn green home grants.

Offering up to £5,000 – or £10,000 for those on low incomes – for energy efficiency measures such as insulation and heat pumps, the scheme is intended to help people save on gas and electricity bills and cut carbon emissions, as well as creating thousands of green jobs. It was unveiled in July as part of an economic rescue package for the coronavirus pandemic.

According to government data, only 1,174 installers have signed up to the scheme, which started on 30 September, while more than 36,000 householders have applied for the grants, which will be available until March.

Green campaigners are growing increasingly concerned about the scheme, which is so far the UK’s only policy measure aimed at a green recovery, despite Boris Johnson’s pledge to “build back better”. ....

Hundreds of millions in green grants for English homes pulled despite delays

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/feb/10/hundreds-of-millions-in-green-grants-for-english-homes-pulled-despite-delays

Quote

The government’s flagship programme for a green recovery is in turmoil after it was revealed that hundreds of millions of pounds are being withdrawn from its green homes grant programme.

Ninety-five per cent of the £1.5bn pot provided for householders in England to make their homes less carbon intensive remains unspent due to long delays in giving out grants to householders and making payments to installers.

Some householders have been waiting nearly five months for the grants to be approved and installers say they have had to lay off staff because they are owed tens of thousands of pounds by the scheme, which is run by an American global consulting firm, ICF.

By 22 January, only £71m of the £1.5bn promised to householders had been given out – less than 5%. The grants have been extended to run until March 2022 because of the delays.

But in a parliamentary answer, the business minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan revealed the £2bn available would not be rolled over into the next financial year from March.

She was asked by Labour’s Catherine West whether any underspend in the first tranche of the £2bn green homes grant programme to March 2021 would be rolled over now that the programme was being extended into 2021-22.

The minister said: “The original funding for the green homes grant voucher scheme was announced as a short-term stimulus, for use in the 2020-21 financial year only.”

She indicated a far smaller amount announced by the chancellor – £320m – would be available from March this year for the green homes grant programme – effectively withdrawing hundreds of millions of pounds from the programme...

Retrofitting leaky homes would cost £5bn over next four years, UK ministers told

Exclusive: industry leaders say plan would cut energy bills and put UK on track for climate targets

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/may/28/retrofitting-leaky-homes-would-cost-5bn-over-next-four-years-uk-ministers-told

Article quotes from the major VI's

...or perhaps demolish many of these poorly insulated / badly built houses and build properly insulated modular MMC houses  like they have been in Europe for decades?

but perhaps that would threaten the VI's control.

or perhaps invest in solar tech / wind  & give everyone low cost electricity to heat their badly insulated homes as it would cost a fortune of ££ the Gov does not have to retrofit or replace houses with modular

The UK has spanked most other nations with the vaccination programme - the only other one that is on a par is Israel.

I am not a supporter of any party but I think the vaccination programme has been fantastic.
