It was signed by four men; John Janssen, Jul Gyselinck, Louis Chantraine, and Jul Van Hemeldonck, who explain they had worked on the same ceiling 79 years ago.

The message written on the back of a work coupon translates: "When this ceiling will have to painted again we will no longer be on this earth.

"We have to tell the following generations that we didn't have a happy life. We've lived through two wars. One in 1914 and one in 1940, that counts for something eh?

"We're working here nearly starving from hunger, they extort us for mere cents for almost no food at all.

Lazy fookers. Not like the hard working baby boomers who rebuilt the country.

There's a bit more to the message, first bit is quite wisely prophetic right now, second part is interesting:

"...

I want to advise the next generations for when another war comes along. Have a sufficient amount of food in excess like rice, coffee, flour, tobacco, grains, wheat, to keep you alive.

"Enjoy life to the fullest and if necessary take another wife. The ones who are married: Look after your home! Salut men!"

Were they working as slave Labour for the Nazis in Belgium in 1941?

I know life is tough today but it’s a walk in the park compared to living in Nazi occupied Europe.

Just a pity we can send those who throw the words Nazi and fascist out with abandon back in time so they can experience the actual reality of what those terms and ideas really meant.

You could say they where the hermes delivery drivers of the times.

Hermes the messengers and paid the same probably as today.

Those messages of pain are clear to see and even on a database. Just check the land registry from the 90s and the pain is evident today for all to see.

We have to tell the following generations that we didn't have a happy life. We've lived through two wars. One in 2008 and one in 2020, that counts for something eh?

Exactly that is hardship not the "hardship" and "stress" that people "endure" now.

The boomers did exactly that. Serial monogamists, and boy did they look after their own homes, to the exclusion of anybody else's.
