Really sad to hear that - but as an ex IBMer our favourite phrase was a career is a job without overtime

The principle is right, you shouldn't be a slave. But that's one of the problems with the most recent workplace culture.

Tell me, did the word 'presenteeism' even exist when you were at IBM. Isn't this a manifestation, born of job insecurity creeping in the last 20 years, that simply wasn't there in the past? (Probably related to globalisation I guess)

Having always been self employed since 22 I tried my best to stop her working all the hours she did! but shes young (29) and "that's what you have to do" .... I do hope she learns.  The roles she is applying for have 300 or so applications but she has a third online interview next week so hopeful....thank you .  Also, her boyfriend hasn't worked for a few months as was a contractor in the recruitment industry and its brutal in that line of work, about 500 application for every job he applies for .  He luckily got a pub job only because he knew someone, but there was well over a 100 people going for that including lawyers!

Sounds nutty but someone i know in that position got work at Aldi at all places - recruiting all the extra staff they are hiring.

Not as glamourous but needs must... expect all supermarkets, warehouses etc are doing the same

I  was there in the 80’s and in customer engineering - like running your own business whilst getting a Salary

Still the days of minimum effort maximum reward and we didn’t s*** unless we got paid for it - happy days

Most of my friends and family have been affected in some way.

Aerospace supply chain - on its knees,    Heavy furlough, 1st round of redundancies done, short time working/pay cut and will be using the job support scheme no doubt.

Online gaming/casino equipment  - cost cutting, more working from home so support/admin/facilities management redundancies.

Retail- behind the scenes senior jobs cut and offered redundancy or low paid shop floor positions.

Tool hire for house builders  - redundancies

Pub/restaurant supply chain- job cuts

Various other industries still using furlough heavily , job security in the balance.

The only people I know that have not  been affected are in education or logistics.

OMG - did it ever....

I did a "thick sandwich" degree (1982-87) and my placement was with IBM "somewhere near the Solent" (not saying where, exactly!) and it was utterly prevalent even back then.

Two of my colleagues (both full time employees, and representative of the breed) freely admitted to going and sitting on the bog for an hour, reading the paper (might have been a euphemism for something - maybe they were "rubbing out" their incorrect answers on the crossword for part of the time 🤣) because it was simply unacceptable to be "seen" to leave the office before 6pm.

Even in a culture where we were all on flexitime, they were sh** scared to leave early - but never mind, we students were all off like a shot at 3pm on a Friday, if the weather was nice.

In fact, I'd hazard a guess that IBM probably invented "presenteeism" (along with daft three-letter-acronyms such as the extraordinary "OAP" (Outside Awareness Panel - or f****ing "window" to anyone normal...)

i`m not affected as i had nowt to lose. 😂

too many positives on here, although they are just people basing their existence on continued work and status.

Hi Folks,

I've got about 6 people who've now lost their jobs, about to lose their jobs or have taken a pay cut, all attributable to the current down turn.

I just found out about 1 manager thirty mins ago, he moved house this year and is now up the creek with less than 1 paddle.

My list, so far, is:

1 engineer

2 managers

1 pilot

1 in finance ( out of work since Jan )

1 in HR

Also,

1 in advertising is on a shoogly peg

1 in finance possibly going on a 3 day week

That's a lot considering I only know 10 people

Anyway, what is happening with your circle of friends/colleagues ?

does it make you evil if you feel no remorse for those in the creek without a paddle ?

Dunno, i feel for the all.

Some have kids to look after, others might not get a decent job again.

Its good to hear some people not being affected.

Wonder if age/area/seniority/other factors has some bearing on it, or maybe its just luck.

personally i could not care less who is affected they should position themselves for bad news and hope for the best. They only have themselves to blame which is why i wish true capitalism would play out and benefits and loans stopped and market rigging. survive or drown your on your own.

That's the way it should be but unfortunately it's far fat gar from this. People don't think generally about what might happen, they've lived through decades of prosperity and growth, i doubt they ever think that'll change.

Some will suffer, some wont but i feel for the kids, they're innocent in all this and no one wants to see friends suffer mentally, unless they're btl scumbags of course

sadly kids have no choice over which debt slave parents they get or what option are ticked for the new leased audi. i guess if the mrs has a reasonable looking silhouette of a shadow in a darkened room there could be a income stream right there to get the economy going again without tax payer assistance.

These anecdotals are really interesting - I must live quite a sheltered life, I think.  Absolutely no-one I know has lost their job this year (or not that they have told me, anyway).

However, this is probably because most people I know are professionals (working from home and busier than ever) or nurses (working in hospital and busier than ever).  I do know a couple of people in jobs related to education and nursing who were on furlough, but are now back in their school and hospital respectively.

I don't have any friends in the hardest-hit industries like pubs/restaurants, holiday firms, airlines etc, where job losses must be much more prevalent.

Most of my friends don't have jobs. They all sit on benefits. But two run hobby businesses which keep them ticking over. One repairs mobile phones and work is at the same level as pre-covid. The other runs a holistic therapy business from home. She got hit hard, but clients are slowly returning. I'd say she's upto 40% pre-covid levels.

Sister's a school teacher, but not going back yet, her decision, and her job's remaining open, though she's not earning now. Brother in law was on the shielding list, he's a forklift driver, and though all his workmates are back, he's staying off. His management have agreed to keep his job open but now furlough's ended for him he's on unpaid leave. They're currently living off savings.

Er, that's it. I'm a lorry driver (food chain, and Amazon) and was unaffected. Worked straight through and no pay cut (although a 4 month pause on my pay rise, which I'm getting next week).

Hopefully this crisis finishes off recruitment agencies. Apart from temps and specialist search and selection there is no need for recruitment agencies. Job boards have disrupted this middleman industry.

In a word...NO.

Too many chancers have been dancing the high wire without a net and been rewarded over the past 20 years, it will do them and society good to have a reality check...even if the reality is a new one.

I'm in IT at big pharma. What's happened is people haven't been going to the doctor, so no referrals to hospital, so we are selling less diagnostic tests. This leads onto less cancer diagnoses, so we're not selling the oncology drugs. Double whammy. Obviously business will rocket at some point in the near/mid term.

However, this has generated the 'head winds' they are using to trigger yet another restructure program. This time, message is, if you're not contributing diectly to the mission statement, expect to be scrutinized. There'll be more outsourcing of jobs like mine etc etc.

How about all those that have given up their jobs, taken voluntary redundancy, early retirement.....decided to retrain, decided to go back to college......emigrate, move, downside, go part-time......do charity work, spend less, do less, work less, and all those that realise now is a great opportunity to change direction, walk a new path.....life is made up of separate timely chunks..... change sometimes forces better changes, not all bad.;)

All excellent ideas for a thread, I look forward to seeing some of these in the near future.

However I just checked the title of this one and its title is:- "The "My mate's lost his job" thread".
