for those who bought Scottish property as little as two years ago, such an investment is looking like a pretty shrewd move. The market has been playing catch-up with England's, and while annual house price inflation slowed to its weakest rate in nine years south of the border (three per cent a year)
Scotland is up 13 per cent
and rising

Although prices were low to start with, they have
risen by a staggering 34 per cent
in Orkney, by 33 per cent in the Western Isles, and by 28 per cent in Argyll and Bute. Property in industrial towns has also risen dramatically: Glenrothes up 28 per cent and Leven 26 per cent.
And it's the affordability of first homes that keeps the whole thing going.

Och Aye, and we have that bonnie Gordon Brown to thank for this greast miracle.

Big deal. The house price surge finally hits the thumbless hicks in my 3rd world country.

Incidentally, edinburgh's stagnant or falling. Don't think Glasgows doing great.

But the scotland average houseprice is still increasing :angry: !

Scotland hasn't quite destroyed the whole of its electronics industry yet, or the rest of manufacturing / shipbuilding etc, just one little more push should do it.

Scottish prices are playing catch-up on the way up....

...and they'll play catch-up on the way down too.

Glasgow wasn't doing that well. The most recent(?) quarterly results showed a hefty fall.

Scotland hasn't quite destroyed the whole of its electronics industry yet, or the rest of manufacturing / shipbuilding etc, just one little more push should do it.

Hey, but our Executive keeps builders busy installing separate entrances and staff-rooms for Roman Catholic pupils/teachers at "shared campus" schools, whilst simultaneously keeping bill-posters busy pasting up huge "anti-sectarian" bill hoardings. All without blushing...

Incidentally, keep an eye on tomorrow's by-election in Dumfermline. Should have been a gimme for Labour, but a combination of Gordy trying to interfere with bridge tolls and finding out he didn't have the authority, the closure of the Lexmark printer factory (700 jobs gone) and the disarray in the LibDems could all mean that the SNP could run it very close. Labour are worried enough to have wheeled out half the cabinet during the campaign. If they lose this seat, it is a big, big deal!

Yeah, right, that's why a desirable property along the road from us went on the market at £375K March 2005 and sold last month for £265K and why I had to reduce my OO price from £275K August 2004 to fixed £250K to get a sale in November 2005. The *rse fell out of the south of Scotland market July 2004 for higher priced properties. Lower priced "in town" properties are still pretty buoyant, but this is because there is not an oversupply in this area and desperate people are paying ridiculous prices to get on the ladder. IMHO.

Oh my God is that really true about the separate entrances? What is their stated reason for such a ridiculous and worrying practice? And what are they going to do when they get a muslim or hindu pupil whi will refuse to use either entrance - Do the have a '..and everyone else' entrance or will they have to provide a new entrance for each new religion practices by pupils?

Amazing, I assume everyone in Scotland is on £40k and they've had a population explosion with a huge demand for homes. :P

Given the demographics who do they expect to sell these houses to in 20 years time?

Interestingly, the majority of buyers were first-time investors. This illustrates how different the Scottish property market is from the rest of the UK. At the bottom end of the market, whilst first-time buyers in England have a hell of a time of it, first-time buyers in Scotland can still get started.

One third of the buyers are Scots, from the central belt and Aberdeen, a few are locals who have bought for investment, and the rest are from England with a smattering of Australians, Irish, and Americans with Scottish roots.

Hrm, it seems they don't quite understand the motives of the 'speculator', they may appear to be a good substitute but they're not like first-time buyers are they, things move on a whim and the hot money can flow out as quickly as it arrived, locusts is probably a better term. Most investors aren't intending to live up there so the places will be empty, whole places devoid of people and if they're rented out to locals they've just found themselves a new absentee landlord.

It is indeed true: read this

The stated reason is something about retaining the ethos of a Catholic school. The actual reason is that 90% of Scotland's Catholic population vote Labour, and they are the most cohesive and well defined voting block in the country - put simply, the RC church has enormous influence of the West of Scotland Labour party, and the RC church insisted on separate entrances and staffrooms. Frankly, only serious pressure has forced them to accept shared campuses.

As for the muslim/Hindu pupil - Scotland doesn't technically have "Protestant" schools - it has RC schools and non-denominational schools. Many ND-schools are de facto protestant schools by virtue of the catchment area, and any religious education - which is generally of the "be nice to your mum and dad, and help old ladies cross the road" type - will normally be taken by the local Church of Scotland minister, or by a rota of ministers from other denominations if there's a significant presence in the area. However, the question of an applicant's religion will not come up in a job interview at an ND school, whereas at an RC school...

This would all just be funny if it wasn't for the fact the Scottish Labour talk about "the cancer of sectarianism in Scotland" one minute, whilst funding religious apartheid the next - all with their Lanarkshire/Glasgow heartlands in mind.

Oh I shouldn't worry the majority of Scotlands GDP now comes from the public rather than the private sector. And with public jobs offering higher wages, longer holidays, shorter hours, greater job security, and gold plated pensions it won't be long before the private sector is pushed completely out of Scotlands economy. At which point most Scots will be paid by the greatest Laird of all..... who ironically will be living down in London....Gordon Brown.

I see what you mean but I see the contradictory nature of Scottish labour's words and actions as the funny (as in 'funny ridiculous') part and the sectarianism in schools distinctly alarming.
