Bail outs for everyone. Once you start it is hard to stop. Got to love the magic money tree.

And they will probably get one. Notice he was peddling the employment line so he's pulling on heart strings there.

Everyone and their dog wants a bailout. 2007/08 precedents.

lots of energy goes into making a car.....cars to be disposed of in an eco way.....far too much waste, do we really need to be turning over cars so fast....build them to last longer.;)

Funnily enough the same person predicted ford would soon be producing cars with a life of 2-5 years as, if we move to an autonomous car future where everyone shares pool cars, then a car continually used 24 hours a day will be good to scrap after a few years.

Ford's problem is simple, their cars cost a fortune. A new Fiesta starts over £20k now. That's absolutely insane and is around a doubling since 2008.

No one is taking responsibility for sorting out pricing in the car sector. If the 'cost'  for calculating a lease is £20k, then you can often get the same car brand new on the forecourt for £16-17k and through a broker for £13-15k depending on popularity. But they need the sticker price to be £20k for the lease calculations, including the guaranteed minimum future value, to work.

The UK vehicle scrappage scheme (also vehicle discount scheme and car scrappage scheme) is a scrappage scheme that was introduced in the 2009 United Kingdom Budget to encourage British motorists to purchase a new, more environmentally-friendly car or van and scrap an older, more polluting one that they have owned for more than twelve months. The scheme was extended in September 2009 and again in February 2010 and it finished at the end of March 2010.

In February 2010, a separate Plug-in Car Grant to provide £5,000 towards the cost of electric vehicles was announced and it began in January 2011.[1

Quote

The Plug-in Car Grant started on 1 January 2011 and is available across the UK. The program reduces the up-front cost of eligible cars by providing a 25% grant towards the cost of new plug-in cars capped at GB£5,000 (US$7,450).[169][170] From 1 April 2015, the purchase price cap was raised to cover up to 35% discount of the vehicle's recommended retail price, up to the already existing GB£5,000 limit. This change means electric cars priced under GB£20,000 will be able to take advantage of most or all of the £5,000 discount.[171]

Both private and business fleet buyers are eligible for this grant, which is received at the point of purchase and the subsidy is claimed back by the manufacturer afterwards.[169] The subsidy programme is managed in a similar way to the grant made as part of the 2009 Car Scrappage Scheme, allowing consumers to buy an eligible car discounted at the point of purchase with the subsidy claimed back by the manufacturer afterwards.[169][170][172]

The government announced in April 2014 that funding for the full grant of up to GB£5,000 will remain in place until either 50,000 grants have been issued or 2017, whichever is first.[171][174] As forecasts estimated that the scheme will reach its 50,000 limit around November 2015, the government announced in August 2015 that the Plug-in Car Grant will continue until at least February 2016 for all plug-in cars with CO2 emissions of 75 g/km of under.[175] The Government also announced that a minimum of GB£200 million (US$311 million) has been made available to continue the Plug-in Car Grant.[176]

Why give Ford money when they can spend it on giving everyone £10 off a burger??

Anyhow, bailout or not, the car industry is old hat and will contract severely in the end no matter what.

No one is using their fecking cars anyway! We have just filled up on diesel for the second time since March 12th.

1600 diesel engine:- 40l on 12/03, 40l at end of June, 40l at the beginning of Aug....with WFH we don't really need it.

GET THE KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL, then worry about this cr@p.

I recon there will be various "cash for clunkers" type schemes across the globe, before the year is out.

There will probably be some condition that you have to buy an electric or hybrid, just for the pho-green label.
