IT sounds like a daft story from a Hollywood movie, but a thrifty writer is on the way to proving he can buy a house with a paperclip.
ONE RED PAPERCLIP: Writer Kyle MacDonald plans to turn this piece of stationery into a house
The wannabe first-time homeowner decided he could not afford to buy a house and so decided to work his way up in value until he had a roof over his head.
With each step he has traded up from the original small piece of stationery and has got as far as a 1995 Ford van.

SSSSSSHH don't tell Gordon he may announce this idea as a way to help FTBs.

"Kyle's initial trade swapped the paperclip for a pen in Vancouver, the pen became a doorknob, which was traded for a portable barbecue, then swapped for a generator, to become a full beer keg and neon Budweiser sign in New York. "

So has someone done the reverse and ended up with a paperclip instead of a house?

If he's gained someone else has lost.

That's newton's first rule of shopping isn't it?

Ordinarily I would say you are right, but in Gordon's miracle economy it is possible to get something for nothing. While people still believe in the miracle of course.

the pen became a doorknob, which was traded for a portable barbecue

It must have been either a gold plated doorknob or a very small portable barbecue (would a box of matches quailify as a portable barbecue?)
