Pr0n age ID checks - April 2019

Recommended Posts

Anyone got any thoughts on the age verification checks to view adult content the Government is bringing in from April?

I just had a thought that I might just stop viewing that material altogether. We’ll see.

Seems most likely a VPN could be used to defeat the checks anyway.

Pretty much my first job was a research project for ICSTIS - the organisation that regulated premium-rate telephone numbers. Back in the early 90s there was concern about chat lines etc. ICSTIS made it a requirement to register a credit card, partly to stop kids racking up huge bills without their parents' knowledge. The move killed the industry stone dead. Now with nothing to regulate they asked me to look at how they could regulate the new-fangled Internet.  They were a bit miffed when I told them it didn't work like that.

This kind of regulation can have a really dramatic effect, although I'm sure technology will find a way around it.

Doubtless easy to get around with a VPN. The whole concept of these checks is pretty loathsome, belongs more in China than here and considering the number of dodgy sites around the last thing you should be doing is encouraging people to give any personal information to them (not that that should ever be encouraged unless it's absolutely necessary for the service).

In a great many ways I'm all for going back to the past but moving back towards Victorian ideas about sex, forget it. And that's what's driving it rather than any utterly spurious concern about children.

All porn does is give an unrealistic expectation on how quickly a plumber will turn up

Or what happens when your pizza arrives.

Agree @Riedquat, the 'won't somebody think of the children' idea is pretty tenuous.

You’re not allowed!

I forgot to update the thread to say the government realised they’ve made a horlicks of this so have delayed it at the last minute. So you’re free to continue watching smut at the moment.

Only if there's cheesey '70s funk music playing in the background, and a woman complaining about how hot the room is...

If it helps to minimise the number of children getting colostomy bags from having pron style a**l then it’s probably fair enough to try. If it doesn’t work just roll it back.

Can you think of a single instance where politicians or police have voluntarily given up any powers? The anti terrorism powers that Labour created after 9/11 wound up being used by some councils to spy on what people were putting into which recycling bin.

At least they would know what they are talking about, for once.
