Top Banter and Great Haircuts!!

Recommended Posts

My regular barber closed after cutting my hair for thirty years. A new practitioner has a board outside offering 'Top Banter and Great Haircuts'.

What would I be letting myself in for if I went in?  Would I be expected to contribute? Or, worse, be the target of the general merriment?

When they say "go anywhere nice!?" after you mention a previous holiday, reply with "Thanks for asking. Actually no, we decided this year to go somewhere pretty horrible for a change".

I don't mind small talk, especially when it's a subject you know about because they ask lots of questions and make me feel like I am actually interesting.

Where I live barbershops used to be few and far between, usually one older guy on their own. In the last few years new ones seem to be cropping up everywhere, with multiple staff, and quite large premises, they never look that busy, amazes me that they can keep going.

I remember once working away somewhere long hours, nipped to the local town centre to get a haircut on a lunchbreak. Walked in the first barbershop I saw, but nobody there. A minute later a bloke came in through a side door from the adjoining greasy spoon cafe, took his apron off and cut my hair in less than 5 minutes!

I'm all for that. Don't want to spend time listening to banter, just give me the number 1 short back and sides. And stop the preening about and clipp-clipping. I don't want to return within two months.

I usually have to encourage some hairdressers to get stuck in, take more off. They can be a bit averse if trained in trendier establishments or more used to unisex salons, and possibly wary of any emotional reactions from an over- cut!

I'm a bloke and it will grow back anyway, i'm not worried if it looks severe for a week or so. Can wear a hat if need be! 🤠

Don't mind the cut taking a bit of time, I don't like looking shaved on top, but I'm with you on the banter. Occasionally a little bit of what's going on locally is OK (from a different perspective to what I get in the local).
