No really 'hypocrisy' but resignation to the fact that the majority of human beings are self-serving and greedy and don't want socialism or even a social contract - they want a big house which goes up in value all the time (as will you when you buy one) and an Audi to make other people jealous of them, and to pay as little tax as possible. So the Democrats in the USA and then New Labour in the UK embraced this 'aspiration' (ie greed) and we got what we got. Tories on both sides of the house. Also, we've not heard labour condemning HTB, RTB, suppressed rates, QE or any of the other props and schemes. All most voters have is a choice between who they'd like to be screwed over by. I had to laugh the other day when paying a tax on the government website. There was a button at the end to rate the service. Like paying tax is a service! If those are representative of the kind of people you know, then you need to establish new friendships. Honestly, none of my family or social circle are like that. We all prefer life experiences to hoarding money, making people jealous or accumulating paper wealth in the form of property. I'll grant you the tax one though ? That's a very good way of putting it, in fact lots of people around the world do the very same thing, aborigines will burn large tracks of wooded land to rejuvenate it. That old car that you keep patching up constantly, the house that should have been pulled down decades ago, Tudor houses for example at best should be at best just kept for historical references and not lived in, for starters they are the most environmentally unfriendly places you can get lived in usually by preachy people that make out they want the best for the planet. Hard as it is sometimes, things must be allowed to fall down, collapse, fail and maybe even die at times, then hopefully something stronger, better, and more joyful will replace it. Gradient-based optimization algorithms do the same when they get stuck at a local maximum; they randomize the start point to see if they can do better than before.
