frankief Posted August 26, 2018 Share Posted August 26, 2018 My old banger car has failed the new MOT and I was thinking about getting a second hand Berlingo or equal small van. Not to live in! ☺️ but useful for taking bikes out to countryside at weekends, general visits to tip, and will come in useful when moving from one rented hole to the next until HPC ever happens. I'm thinking of: Tax - seems to be £225 based on emissions as these are mostly diesel and high mileage. Test - seems to be similar price to car, but is it more thorough? Insurance - this is where I have no idea, would I be on 'commercial rates'? At moment being a careful boomer in a good post code I am only paying £250-300 for an Astra or equal. I think my local council issue permits for residents with small vans who can make one visit a month or something like that. At the moment it's free of charge ☺️. The site has ,of course, been privatised and is run by some foreign company with oppressive security gates and ANPR cameras. Fly tipping locally is on the rise. This could be because local tradesmen with a name on their van are turned away at the gates or receive some sort of fixed penalty if they don't comply with the rules. long time lurking Posted August 26, 2018 Share Posted August 26, 2018 Insurance will be the similar (but it can be very hit and miss), MOT the same, the thing to watch out for with insurance is you very rarely get third party cover to drive other/peoples vehicles like you would with car insurance ,it`s also worth trying the specialist insures such as Aidrian Flux especially if the van is a second vehicle as you might be able to get a limited mileage policy .just say you are using it for leisure activities such as mountain biking canoeing ..etc Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Pedant mode/ not all trants are large, there is the Connect range /Pedant mode if you dont need a van chassis for tax or work reasons, then personally i would get the non van version of the car derived van, ie the Ford tourneo, Berlingo car etc classed as a car, and seats can easily be removed for the van use, and its basically a Ford connect. It's funny, for tax reasons tradies go for the most car-like trucks (Double cab), and for tax (and tip runs) non-tradies go for the most van-like cars (Multispace, Tourneo) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
