Hectors House Posted August 13, 2018 Share Posted August 13, 2018 (edited) I've been seeing people living in tents across the Uk in Cities, towns, villages and countryside, and before some wag says "holidaymakers" I am on about the growing number of homeless who are living in tents. I was shocked to see in a residential area of Loughborough in Leicestershire, people pitched up on small green spaces between pavements and roads, what was worse it seemed to be several. Homeless living in tents I was reading only the other day about a guy who ended up living in his tent and was found a year after he died bless him, will see if I can dig the story up. Seems it was a case of normal bloke and things spiralled bit by bit. I have worked with Crisis and always remember a conversation I had with one of the homeless several years ago, The guy was articulate and sharp and quite pleasant to talk to, I ask him "how did you end up like this", his answer simply "circumstance", that's all he said and it rang true all those years later with so many sad stories. I also have the sad hobby now of spotting the converted van dwellers, everywhere now, and I don't mean pikey types. Horridbloke Posted August 14, 2018 Share Posted August 14, 2018 Tents pop up a fair bit around Bournemouth, my town of residence, and it can't just be about shelter. Horseshoe Common, a small wooded area across the road from the main drinky fighty spot, has a few at the moment. Some are positioned to avoid notice but others have appeared right next to the spur road underpass and just off the main footpath - good luck getting any sleep whatsoever or indeed not getting your head kicked in by all and sundry. disenfranchised Posted August 14, 2018 Share Posted August 14, 2018 Sat in a traffic jam on the Northampton ring road recently, I spotted an abandoned tent pitched in some trees next to a retail park, somebody had evidently been living in it. Last year I spoke to a young homeless couple who I am pretty sure had drug problems; they were living in a tent on an area of common land by the river just outside the town centre. It's not unusual, but nothing like what you see in the US. The more organised van dwellers have been around in growing numbers for a while, particularly in southern England. I used to rent some land on a farm and they sometimes let a couple of van dwellers park up in exchange for a bit of rent. No power, no toilet, 100m walk to an outside tap that wasn't drinking water. Vans heated with multifuel stoves often mainly fired by scavenged wood. I got to know one (female, early 30s) a bit & did a few mechanical jobs on her Mercedes 308, paid back in Lidl tea and biscuits. This was around 2006-8 when housing had become ridiculously expensive, but before the shortage was perhaps as acute as it is now. I think she got mostly agency factory/warehouse/driving type work in the winter around the south end of the Midlands, and got the bits that needed doing on the van done whilst it was mainly not needed (push bike to work) & then spent the summer doing rather less and spending more time socialising and travelling rather than parked. It's not a new thing. I vaguely knew a guy 20 years ago who lived in a bright purple converted ex-Utility company Transit box van. I seem to remember he was a lorry driver. He was probably in his mid to late 50s - I sometimes wonder what happened to him, I moved away from the area and when I returned he was no longer about. Living in a large van I've converted myself well has appealed to me at times in some ways. The whole debt slave / rat race thing is well overrated. One of the happiest guys I've met in the past year doesn't work much any more and travels the world with his young family in a high spec self built vehicle - small lorry sized & 4x4, they can be out in the wilderness for a month self-sustained, the electrical system cost £50k to build! Many homeless folks only use them as a last resort.
