A million new houses should be built just for workers under 40 to unlock home ownership for Generation Rent, urges Theresa May’s former adviser

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/6613499/a-million-new-houses-should-be-built-just-for-workers-under-40-to-unlock-home-ownership-for-generation-rent-urges-theresa-mays-former-adviser/

The 500k homes for rent at up to 20% market discounts would undercut a lot of private landlords, and help stop them just raising the rents. But the 'stepladder loans' sound quite dodgy - more HTB by another name.

Move along, nothing to see here.

Absolutely nothing will be done about the housing crisis, by the government anyway. The sate of the housing market right now is no accident and it is far more important as far as the government is concerned to have themselves, their friends and millions of conservative like minded people 50 plus to hold on to their over priced assets and inheritances.

We will get out property crash and 100,000's or maybe millions of homes will become more easily available, but it will be unplanned events that cause it and the UK will not be a very pleasant place to live in for a while. I can even see a possibility of a reduction in the UK population in decades to come . And all our problems will stem from the greed of those that would not allow a early 2000 recession and gambled the UK future so they could hold on to their undeserved speculative riches.

It makes me laugh that they want to offer below market rental rates, but they want people to pay 'at market' purchase rates, using cheap government loans. They have accepted the principle that market rates can be undercut by government, so why not forget about the cheap loans, and just give buyers a discount on the selling price to make the properties more affordable?

Just provide homes people of any age can afford to buy or rent........there are places that provide nice homes for local single full time working people available to rent without help, apart from the help of low rents that local wages can afford.......else there will be places where there will be no people to do the jobs the wealthiest rely on others doing for them......they will no longer live there because they can't afford to on what many full time local wages pay......the wages do not cover living costs if have to pay what are asking in rent ....forget a mortgage no savings.?

While there's truth in that, they are also facing more and more discontent from "Generation Rent". They know that they can't just mutter "It's the new normal" and still get votes from the younger generation.

For instance: A single first-time buyer in London needs 17 years to find 15% deposit. How long are people going to take this? It has been bad for a long time, but now it's ridiculous.

Not everyone wants to buy these days ...... safe and long-term secure tenure, protected affordable rents are what many would prefer.....both freedom to move easily and better choices......can always buy when retire in place of choice out of savings/investments from a lifetime of work.?

As years are passing I am amazed at what people will acclimatize  or become desensitised to. I talk to family  about the 1970's and 1980's and they don't recollect the same failed world the politicians try and convince us that we will go back to if we make bad political decisions today. In fact the picture I get were still hard working people with problems, but who had a family life with quality time and where people could afford homes if they put their minds to it. People need to remember the mindset was different back then as well, it was terrifying for many to borrow 2.5 x your wages, I always remember and old uncle of mine always giving my aunt an earful because back in the 1960's she would not allow him to buy a house that was only just over 2 x his yearly wage and was/is the best home in that area with land.

A few people have taken the micky out of me for bringing up the Darling buds of May ?, but the point I was trying to make about that era was a recovering Britain  after WW2 that was recovering from adversity, we built homes in the 1950's like we have never built before and in the biggest numbers with a smaller population than ever before. We had family lives 50 years ago that could be funded on one 38 weekly wage and a bit maybe with a mortgage debt of 2 yearly wage  or smaller. Today I see skilled even academic professionals  working 100 hours plus weekly with only one child that makes life a nightmare to organise. Their bodies are running off fumes and they are having no lives at all as they pay for homes where they never really wanted to live with mortgages that would have finished off past generations, and yet they keep taking the pain.

I do not see these people protest and complain as they should just as much as generation rent who in my opinion are two sides of the same coin, NO, they have no time to or the will power anymore. Not like the constant complainers and the likes of those  trying to abuse the Grenfell tower tragedy for their own gain as they home several welfare conceived kids or 1/3 of a million people we are still allowing into the UK through immigration who within days very quickly learn "Their rights".

No sorry, I have no faith in generation rent standing up and fighting. It's not apathy though, it's just a government being tough abusive parents and  doing the equivalent of ignoring the kids crying as they burn themselves out and just put up with a nappy full of s***.

All they have to do is vote Corbyn, surely? Or, at least, threaten to in order to get the Tories to ameliorate the situation for them.

The Tories have 100% destroyed aspiration in todays Britain, they preach about helping the kid born in the gutter using hard work and education to crawl his her way out and in a better life. But the sad truth is that this approach rarely works as the Tories today fight for those with wealth, deserved or undeserved, and that's their only function.

Sadly Corbyn is nothing but an alternative and not a good one, just look at the people around him, Abbott really? her only desire is balance the UK equally with ethnics and whites so she can at last inflict her revenge.

BUT

I will be voting Corbyn at this moment, he will in my mind send the UK into a spiral of problems, but unlike the Tories I do not think he will have the skill to polish a turd and will be removed. And then at long last many of us will get a UK we have been hoping for with opportunities, but I will warn you it will not be a pleasant country in many ways to live in.

Completely unnecessary.

Remove all props, stop manipulating the housing market and prices will be set by market forces.

But then people would have to think for themselves! Anarchy! Who would build the roads!

I think it was destroyed under Blair, the Tories did not try hard to fix it.

Personally I could never vote for a party where an MP can say this about rape victims and not have any problems.  (All parties have dodgy people, but no one in Labour cared about this)

Good point and I agree with you, that's probably the starting point but no means the end of it. There has always been that little bit  of a socialist in me, but since Blair it has all been as good as destroyed, on the surface anyway. The Blair "Nu Labor" years that many still brag about were nothing but a group of con men who stole a high spending credit card out of the Tories back pocket and went on a spending binge.

I don't mind hearing Corbyn going on about helping this or that person, but until he also talks about hard work, responsibility and putting in until one day you are unlucky and need to take out for a while, I will just see his "so called helping people" as a euphemism for helping lazy scrounging cry babies who have no pride in themselves.

Why do we need a million new homes?  Has the population increased and if so why?

Well it is increasing, and you can probably guess as to the reason I'd give. I do take the points others frequently point out that the house price issue is largely down to other factors, predominantly irresponsible lending, though. Which is just as well because a million homes is a depressingly large number, that's enough on its own for a very large city.

You're more optimistic than me then.

Only because of it becoming a more unpleasant place to live for many. Many will stay here because they love their country, many will leave because they cannot squeeze anything else out of it. There are many things and ways I would like UK culture to change to prove you are loyal and respectful to this country, and the first would be at least 18 months national service or b*g**r off out of this country.

Brilliant post. I'm the youngest among six siblings, we are all from the South East and I can see how living standards have collapsed through the floor. My eldest siblings can just sit back, chill out, take on stress free easy jobs and have an easy life. On the other hand, myself and my younger siblings are expected to live like pigs and be grateful for it.

The establishment's attitude to the Brexit referendum speaks volumes to me too. Don't vote leave or you will ruin this wonderful country and brilliant economy we have. What a crock of s**t. No wonder they lost. The only remain voter I know round my neck of the woods was a BTL'er, millionaire who married into money. Living the middle class suburban dream. Church going, wealthy socialist who gets her accountant to minimise the tax she pays every year. I can't imagine her voting with a fist in the air saying 'fight the power!'

It is quite amazing that after a clear message was sent via Brexit in June 2016 that we have already allowed an extra 1/2 million people to settle into Britain, and 20% of the non EU entries had no jobs to come to.

It depends on what exactly you find unpleasant. There's an awful lot I find increasingly unpleasant about the UK, with no sign at all that it's going to change, but too many appear to be defining it in entirely materialistic ways. And many of those things are happening elsewhere too.

I'm not keen at all on the idea of national service, or even expecting loyalty (respect I can get behind though). Making that sort of hugely intrusive demand on people is exactly the sort of thing that destroys respect.
