Getting very close to the starting day now: 14/6/18.

England look in good shape to me, with the lowest expectations in years, a youngish side and some decent talent in the ranks.

Take a look at the teams, magnificent stadiums and host cities - https://www.rt.com/fifa2018

Bit of a strange thing to get hung up on, but I'm appalled at the location of the stadium that England will be playing in in Volgagrad. The gigantic statue of Mother Russia stands on top of the Mamayev Kurgan, a hill that marks the furthest point the Germans managed to get into Russia during WW2. From the top, all that lies beyond is the Volga River and, on the far bank, the railway line that funnelled millions of Soviet troops into the meat grinder of Stalingrad. Beyond that is the flat, featureless wastes of Central Asia, stretching unbroken all the way to China. The Germans got so close. It was hand-to-hand fighting on Mamayev Kurgan and even a visiting tourist like myself could feel its strategic and symbolic significance. Now wedged between the hill and the Volga is a bloody football stadium. As I say though, strange thing to get hung up on.

Robbie Williams to perform at World Cup opening ceremony

Robbie Williams will perform at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, just ahead of the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

The singer will be joined by Russian soprano Aida Garifullina, and – presumably not on vocals – former Brazilian international Ronaldo, part of the winning teams in 1994 and 2002.

Russia’s ‘psychic’ cat Achilles predicts the winner of the opening World Cup game

Achilles, whose day job is catching mice at the St Petersburg's Hermitage Museum, plumped for his home nation of Russia, who play Saudi Arabia in the opening match of the tournament today.

Achilles the cat has emerged as Russia's psychic mascot

Achilles posed for photos with the world's media

Egypt next, is this Mohammed Salah chap any good?

Uruguay after, I'm sure Russia's number 4 will be able to keep Suarez and Cavani in his pocket with all his "experience".

Russia still have a lot of work to do to get out of the group. They will need something against Egypt, I think.

In general though, it is good for the tournament atmosphere if the hosts do well and at least get out of the group. However, even if the worst comes to the worst at least they had one good day (which again probably helps with the overall mood and atmosphere of the tournament in general).

How is everyone coping with the time lag for different data sources? I’m watching live bbc1, mate is watching online stream and is about 5secs behind the live game. Not sure about satellite feed delays.

England fans already making themselves at home ...

Two British Men Removed From Train Traveling to Volgograd For World Cup - Source

According to reports, two British fans were removed from a train travelling to the Russian city of Volgograd for the World Cup.

According to a post on Russian social media, purporting to be a leaked internal railway operator's report, said that the injured fan had broken a window on board the train and received cuts to his hand. One of the men had an argument with a police officer, after which he was detained, according to a source.

Russia storm to victory once again!

They have now made the best start by a hosting nation in the entire history of the World Cup!

Presumably honourable defeat awaits in the first knockout game ... but you never know.

Steady on, Errol. This is the low-hanging fruit round. I get the feeling you've got a goodly wedge on at the bookies in all this..

Great result for England (albeit against what must be almost the worst side in the competition).

As I said, England have a youthful side, players with talents and lots of pace. Could get to semis with some luck!
