zugzwang
Quote Ambitious developers across the country are billing their micro-apartment projects as an end to the housing crisis. The Government standard for new homes states one-bed flats must be a minimum of 37 square metres but merchants can get round these rules by converting older properties. This four-storey Victorian terrace in West Hampstead is the latest to receive the micro-apartment treatment, with its rooms converted into 14 separate luxurious studio apartments. These micro-spaces- designed by Bicbloc - are 18 square metres, smaller than the average Travelodge hotel room (30 square metres). It cost developers £600,000 to implement but the homeowner stand to rake in as much as £5.19million if they manage to sell each property for the average price of a studio flat in the upmarket London suburb. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5807125/Four-storey-Victorian-home-converted-14-tiny-18sq-ft-apartments.html Not sure if that's storage space under the bed, or the doors to another three micro-apartments? iamnumerate
Great find, an 18 square meter flat is not luxury but you knew that, I am surprised the Mail didn't.
ccc
Must be a lot of empty brown envelopes lying around in that particular local council planning department.

dryrot
I've been on this site too $%^ing long. This sort of thread comes up every year, and each time its worse... (thx for link, I suppose ) Notable quote from the developer: "The design consists of a group of volumes intersecting with each other. These volumes incorporate all the functions: bed, kitchen, bathroom and lots of storage."

EUBanana
That's not an end to the housing crisis. That is a symptom of the housing crisis, a demonstration that it is ongoing and indeed getting worse every year.

In the future this will either be a) an example of the housing bubble that crashed and the investors lost everything. or b') when housing standards slipped for ever in the UK. I don't know if it will be a or b obviously a is better.

Bear Hug
That is simply dangerous. Bunk beds with no side panels. With a massive potential for waking up at night and falling off. With a bonus mains socket in the steps! So that if don't fall out of bed, you definitely get caught in cables and fall off the stairs on your way down. How is any of this legal? What's going to be the next luxury accommodation project of these particular developers?
Guest
14 people = 14 cars/bikes. 14 lots of rubbish/bins. 14 lots of post. 14 lots of couriers ringing the door to make deliveries. Squeezed into one plot. Insane.

Errol
This sort of conversion shouldn't be allowed. Has the plumbing been altered to take into account the extra human waste/use? Has the amount of parking been massively increased? - Edit: Looking at the picture, the room looks about the same size as a boarding kennel - where one might leave a dog while on holiday. Consumers of services, or at the most disposable goods. That's the way to go! Such limited accommodation is very good for the economy, means people will be out and about more contributing to it instead of hanging around at home not contributing. Just think how much better our lives would be if you're out all the time constantly paying to be distracted instead of ever sitting quietly at home!
