Big things that ain't all that

Recommended Posts

Was watching "How'd You get so Rich" with Katherine Ryan. She got invited to a party aboard a super yacht by some schmoozer who'd made his millions hosting floating parties for the super rich.

Amongst the guest was Stelios Haji-ioannou, so a pretty wealthy bunch. The yacht wasn't of Phil Green proportions, but I'm guessing it was perhaps $50m. So far so impressive.

And then we learned that the schmoozer made his money by product-placing/ advertising high end stuff at the parties. So in one area was a glass case with a display of watches. In another area was an advert for booze or something. Basically it was a shop masquerading as a party. In other words, if you didn't arrive at the "party" feeling like a walking wallet, you soon would once you'd stepped aboard.

And then there was the mis-selling issue: sure the party was "afloat", but they were permanently moored, so hardly an authentic yacht experience.

Then there was the atmosphere: it just looked very boring.

But the thing that struck me most was what was revealed in the long-shots. Sure they were all really rich. Sure they'd all paid to attend. And yes, they were also being advertised to. With all that money and revenue sloshing around then, you might be surprised to hear that everyone had to lose their shoes at the door, like they were a bunch of teenagers making the most of the parents house while the folks were away.

If that's all being super-rich can buy you ...

I'm around these moored super yachts regularly. You always know when work is being carried out inside them by the neat row of workers' shoes on the pontoon by the gangway up onto their lower deck.

Fine for the hired help, but if you want to impress guests you should surely turn a blind eye to their red wine spills etc... it's all so middle class suburban. Like Thelma in the Likely Lads pushing coasters under Terry's mug.
