Wayward
UK Gov's HPI promoting policies spreading misery around the world not only in the UK. BBC article about 'digital nomads'...high cost of housing in UK driving folks overseas. "People in the north of Europe earn quite a lot of money, and obviously it's more convenient for them to live here, because it is much cheaper. And also they can have a better quality of life because of the weather, the beach, etc," he says. He argues that the digital nomads, earning North European wages and living in the cheap south, is forcing up house prices, turning family homes into holiday lets and driving out the locals who can no longer afford to live in the centre of Lisbon. They also feel guilty about the effect they and thousands of other digital nomads are having on the local economy. Agustin Cocola-Gant from the University of Lisbon has been studying the changes among the local Portuguese population of having thousands of digital nomads turning up on their doorsteps. "They see people coming from the north of Europe, that don't speak Portuguese, who are taking their places. The shops, the stores are changing, they're losing the places where they meet with their friends and neighbours." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43927098

macca13
Everything is just an invention.. If any government wanted to, they could fix house price problems with the stroke of a pen.. Foreign buyers have been pushing up prices in and around London - and rippling out elsewhere - since the 70s. It started with the oil rich Arabs, and has gone on more and more ever since. winkie
It is often the nicer places to live are not the most expensive places to live.....that is why the wealthy live in the better places, the places they don't actially have to work in.......they rent out for an income in places where people require to work for a living. Why would Portugal anticipate such a malign UK gov policy...and knock on distortions of their housing market, economy and social cohesion? Psychopaths and sociopaths, despite their expert manipulation, ruthless drive, and confident charm, are often nowhere near as intelligent as they first seem and that's true of even "successful" ones that stay within the boundaries of the law. Dreamcasting
Really is a non story. People have been moving around the world to live since day dot. The vast majority of young British people stay put however and certainly do not go off to live in another country because of the cost of housing here. Besides, doesn't matter where you go, there's problems of some sort that you can't escape.
