Renting - how does it compare around the world?

Could have been a good article if the author had done some more research.  The snippets of information provided are interesting though and have prompted me to go off and do some more reading on the subject.  It does seem as though renting in the U.K. (England at least) is like the Wild West compared with other developed countries.

Despite the article, its a good topic for us all to add to.

We just need to set some parameters so we can compare likewith like eg 3 bed 1 bath brick house in convenient places

Or at least homes fit for the average family.  I think flats are more prevalent in Sweden (Stockholm) for example. So 3 bed & 1 bath home in an area that is commutable to where the local jobs are.

I remember a German rental system fondly, a rental system that was good enough to have altered my views on ownership if we had it here in the UK. Without fail when you met a lovely German girl in her early 20's you could be sure she would have her own place and nice.
