Windrush: Lord Kerslake says policy 'reminiscent of Nazi Germany'

The former head of the civil service, Lord Kerslake, said that some ministers were "deeply unhappy" about the introduction of the "hostile environment" strategy under then Home Secretary Theresa May.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Lord Kerslake, said some saw the policy, which has come under the spotlight during the Windrush row, "as almost reminiscent of Nazi Germany in the way it's working".

well.. in 2014 the law on nationality was changed :

Ministers had made little use of the power, enshrined in the British Nationality Act 1981, to strip people of British citizenship until it became more widely used to deal with British citizens returning from fighting in Syria. In 2014, the power was extended from covering just dual nationals to those who “there were reasonable grounds to consider that they could be eligible for another nationality”.

In theory, anyone with any ancestor of non british origin (even one grandmother) could be "eligible for another nationality". I can't say what % of the population that would cover, but it probably could surprise many.

Maybe 20-30% of the population or new borns have at least one non british ancestor... that's without even looking at the "can of worms" potential in Northern Ireland.
