Retail sales weaker than expected - CBI
31/01/2006 11:06
LONDON (Reuters) - Retail sales volumes fell more than expected in January but shopkeepers predicted a recovery next month, an industry survey indicated on Tuesday.
The Confederation of British Industry’s distributive trades survey’s monthly sales balance fell to -11 this month from 0 in December and below retailers’ own forecasts of -9. Analysts had predicted a balance of -2.
"As retailers had feared, the spending surge seen in December was short-lived and not sustained into the new year," said John Longworth, chairman of the survey’s panel.
But retailers were more optimistic about performance next month, with the expectations balance rising to +1, its highest since May 2005.
The survey was carried out between January 3 and 18.
