TBH, the writing has been on the wall for years regarding diesel cars. I got my mum to sell her diesel Mini a couple of years ago because of it. People who carried on buying diesel cars once all the negative news had started were a bit foolish, to say the least.

Bit of hysteria over diesel taxes at the moment, yet none of them apply to old cars. The change in VED is for new diesel cars, it doesn't increase the tax on older diesels. There doesn't seem to be any moves towards hiking the tax on old cars or jacking up the tax on diesel fuel - I think to do so after so many years of encouraging diesel would be politically foolish.

The one that could start to hit older diesels, finally, is a ban from city centres.

Disclaimer: proud owner of a 2004 vintage diesel with no DPF nonsense - no nonsense diesel clatter and 50+mpg :)

Exactly. You beat me to it. I've read all manner of scare-mongering about this, and this was a link to yet another article which doesn't make it clear that it's only for new cars which are BOUGHT after 1st April.

From the school of not letting facts get in the way of a good fearsome story!  Seems to be the standard these days.  Sensationalised non news is as bad and more prevalent than fake news.

PS: If you buy a car without researching VED, etc, then you should allow evolution to take its course.

Just not in the middle of the entrance to the drive would do. Suppose it doesn’t matter though when it is just the mug tax payer picking up the bill. A private service would not get away with such sloppiness.

Or how about do away with individual collections altogether ? Villages in Spain and Italy seem to work fine with central dumpsters you take your waste to and surely good exercise for the fatties who create the most waste ?

Sounds great.

Your tax wouldn’t go down though. That waste still needs to go tip, processed, recyclables salvaged and then put to land fill.

Apparently the councils sent back  £800m to govt meant for affordable housing, unspent, last year

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/mar/10/housing-budget-817-million-unspent-astonished-mps

whats this about?

The article mentions uptake has been reluctant/slow due to fears ministers wil extend right to buy. Follow the money back and you’ll properly find its again down to the government.

One large one for the row I live in would be more sensible anyway. Need to carry the rubbish to the bins at any rate (can't get a bin lorry up to the houses), might as well just have one big bin instead of a load of small  ones.

I expect my rubbish to be collected by drones. On demand. And incinerated immediately by flamethrower.

The Chinese are already on the ball. I see no immediate issues with this plan.

Except when your arseclown neighbor fills the bin for the entire street with a chopped up sofa+chairs and some bricks and no one else can get theirs in (happened in a flat I rented)

Although there are nominally bins per house everyone tends to just chuck their rubbish into the nearest one that isn't full, since they're all sat in a line, so the same neighbour could do the same anyway, although it would require more chopping to fit the bits in. At least at present though the whole lot are unlikely to fall down the bank behind them.

Its worth keeping an eye on how much councils are investing in commercial property...

Test Valley - ye 2017

total Capital programme £11.5m

Investment properties - £9.17m

80%

What could possibly go wrong...?  (And most of these are outside the borough...)

Mines 5.3% increase.. it’s a joke.. everything is worse, roads, grass, pavements less well kept.. I’m sure the ceo of the council gave himself a pat on the back and a big fat pay rise.. some rubbish about being the most intelligent people running the country we need to pay top dollar.. utter tosh..

Broxbourne and Hertsmere just on the edge of London the same. Prudent financial control seems anathema to them

I wouldn’t say Broxbourne is cheap, we pay £2,329 in band F. They also started charging extra last year on top of the council tax bill to empty the green bins

God help the residents of Haringey in the coming years with a return to the hell hole of the 70/80’s

When I was younger and the Labour Party stood for something ie the working class. It was thought a Tory council and a labour government was a pretty good combination for exactly that reason.

Many are paying 10% of their low income in council tax.People working and getting £1050 a month paying over £100 a month in council tax.

Well my CT is more like 20% of my state pension income and that's with a single person discount.  Unfortunately/fortunately I'm not eligible for pension credit as my savings are too high....................but I can sleep more soundly knowing I have some savings rather than debts and living on handouts.

Just looked up Haringey and a little less which was a surprise - mine was for a 3500 sq foot detached House with big garden 35 mins from the city by slow train

So I think on reflection good value - but does show the council tax system is pretty unfair when you can be paying upwards of £1300 for a flat in many places
