Why do they need 2,000 people in Human Resources anyway?

HR is a joke at the best of times.

Sainsbury's head office used to have around 5k people working in it. I doubt they even have 2k HR people.

It is insane. Back in the day, they were there purely to recruit people and make sure everyone got paid.

Nowadays, we have to do our own recruitment and there's a payroll department!

Leaving HR to concentrate on awareness sessions, resilience workshops etc etc...

Reading the article, the 2000 will consist of both Head office and Store Staff.  Payroll is probably being centralised and pushed to use BACS payments so you don't need anyone to make up wage packets.  With inflation pushing into margins, they are hurting. Sainsbury is too middle of the road - not posh enough to push prices like Waitrose,  not aggressive enough to screw suppliers like Tesco and Asda, and not cost focused like Aldi and Lidl.

I think only Morrisons only has room to evolve and grow, subject to getting a new top management team and getting rid of the london centric morons that they took on.

It's worse than that: that's just what they do when they're in a holding pattern. The way they earn their keep is through enforcement, control and psychological warfare, all directed at the other employees.

If you have a co-worker who kicks up a fuss about poor working conditions or low pay, HR will sort him out. If people start to complain seriously, there is always an HR "process" for them to dissipate their energy and morale into. The rest of the time, HR are dreaming up stack ranking schemes or other forms of competitve evaluation, which are much easier on management than trying to gauge the value of someone's work, or (heaven forfend) inspiring people, and which are designed to pit workers against each other, leaving them no time to think about how much is being wasted on expensive and useless management.

HR are worth their weight in gold, so all the functions (like recruitment and training) get off-loaded onto the other employees to allow HR to maximise their value.
