In this article about house prices, there is a comment about the UK being on the brink of social collapse because of the cost of housing. I agree, no matter how much denial Mark Carnet appears to be in judging by today's comments. What are people's thoughts? Is a socialist government the only current way out?

No

Because never in my life has spending more money solved an underlying issue.

We already have corporate socialism adding additional socialism for already highly paid public sector workers (comparatively when pensions and considered) and a benefit system that encourages working 16 hours and having kids is just unsustainable.

The only goo thing about a corbyn is that he will bring about the collapse of the system.

What is needed is the type of leader most would not want free market, hard nosed and ripping the financial system off the GOV teat the.... Paul Volker Ron Paul type type UK equivalent.

I want a leader who tells me how it is and makes changes that are hard and needed so we dont have to nibble at them.

We're a long way off a violent collapse in society. The media, social media, the establishment and the financiers who control it all would like us to think we are so we get scared and follow our orders.

Brexit was the fight back they never expected, we took them unawares and without a proper plan to destroy us for our impudence they've decided just to ****** us about for years while they try and wriggle out of it.

If some nutter murdering a load of kids at a pop concert didn't start riots then I doubt much else is going to right now.

Societal collapse is inevitable but it's nothing to do with money.

We were once united by religion, culture and ethnicity.

Now we're united by........nothing.

reminds me of a nice documentary i watched about King Rodger of Sicily

Wonderful achievement great economy everyone living nicely together...........until they did not and it went to shit.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_II_of_Sicily

Money is papering over a lot of cracks i certainly do not want to be in London when it runs out.

Im turning down offers for employment in London on large salary's that are excellent opportunity's simply because I cant afford to live there. Has to start taking effect sooner or later.

Bad for my career. Bad for the economy.

Happy to take 15k less and live a better life.

I'd say we were more often oppressed and controlled by these things than set free or united by them. Brexit is just one part of that rolling, weird quest for some idea of shared UK identity that started when, maybe Britpop era?, or at least the stirrings of people wondering who they are and what they might share in the sense of being British, if indeed there is such a thing, as a reaction to being told that in general it's a bad idea not to look, think and want the same things as everyone else in the developed world, which seems to boil down to buying flash tat and status envy

Screw that, I want to drink warm beer, drive a battered Jensen Interceptor and read difficult books.

We are at least united in our mild malcontent. That's the glue that binds Brit society...

I've been saying for a few years you need to be on £100k salary to live a good life in London, that's utter bullsht now probably closer to £500k

In order to get Thatcher, you need Heath and Callaghan first.

It depends on what you think a country is. To some it's a hotel where anyone can come and go.

I believe it's more than that

The shooting by the police of an ex drug dealer who was allegedly carrying a gun managed to cause widespread riots in London in 2011. Odd what people get angry and riot about.

I am sure it could easily happen again. As has been pointed out what United people in the past - faith, religion, common values - no longer exists. No loyalty to the country - just in it for the money and benefits.

I just hate both

Both have nothing but derision for anyone who works but are happy enough to leech from them.

Lots of microscopic benefits scroungers and a few large 10 inch leaches called banker, polititian, land banker etc.

Only dealing with one of those groups will improve the situation. I can understand the comments here about voting for outright hard socialism even if they are not normally that way inclined , as a matter of priorities. Scorched earth as btl_hater put it.

not disagreeing with your views btw. I just don't care about people on benefits in relative terms.

I don't think we are on the brink.

As long as people have food and water and TV they will be fine.

The London riots was an abberation, the last straw for some. It was the result of a series of events, not one shooting.

It always amuses me when people pray for TSHT or collapse. On the event such an event occurs, they would probably be the first to be wiped out....

British people are nowhere near having kids at a rate that replaces the old people dying off, so we clearly need encouragement.

What I think is unsustainable, is a property market that pretty much forces couples to be dual income families whilst trying to bring up kids. We had a brief window of opportunity for a couple of generations where one parent could parent young kids full time pre-school, and then work part time and parent around school. Now we are heading back to the Victorian model of nearly everybody works full time, except we haven't quite shoved the kids up a chimney again yet. The underclass who can't sustain themselves properly have "benfits" - the professionallly bone idle are on a sort of "cash for kids" system suplemented by a diagnosis for some vague exagerated ******** like chronic anxiety and depression (I'm ******ing lazy and have no intention of working) in order to be signed into the benefits neverland where you dont even have to pretend to be looking for work after the kids grow up.

Automation was supposed to mean we all work less - reality being I work longer hours than either of my parents did, my state pension age is 8 years later than my mothers was and 3 years later than Dads, and my taxes ensure others can sit on their ass without working at all.

Moved to a quiet home counties Village, detached house on private gated estate, no through road, neighbours shoot and have shotguns and some have firearms, got a shotgun myself for recreational use, considering the extra hassle of a full firearms licence, but cant be arsed, but will do it if they extend the licencing system Scotland has for Airguns now, apart from storage of ammo conditions virtually no difference to applying for an Airgun licence in Scotland as a full Firearms licence. A semi Auto 10 shot mag .22 Rimfire can throw a lot of lead downwind at "pests" and energy levels lethal to humans.

Happy to sit back and watch the riots on TV, clean my shotgun, if mobs reach sleepy home counties villages and the police don't respond, well I sure the residence of our private estate will rally to protect our neighbours.

I understand that urge. But it's very hard to put it into words. It either slides into jingoistic, John Bull fantasy pap or you get lost trying to say some things are important, even though they are fleeting, subtle, impossible to pin down. That's why Blair was so seductive to so many, he had a vision for globalism in the big frightening post-Thatcher insular world that really lifted UK GDP, until people began to feel threatened by it.

The UK has a lot going for it, but parliamentary demos is no longer fit for purpose.

I think we're in agreement.  Too many hands of all kinds dipping into our pockets.

Having returned from a brief visit to London , I would say that it didn't really feel British to me anymore, just some sort of enclave where what you might describe as traditional Anglo Saxon has become a minority, this helps to explain a lot of the things that go on.

For the first time I felt really worried about what might soon be left of the things I really love and treasure in the UK .

One very real problem is that it is so completely unrepresentative of the rest of the UK. Yet our government, our civil service and our state broadcaster only really know London.

So I don't think there will be social unrest because the indigenous population has been marginalized.
