Housing minister Peston on Sunday

Recommended Posts

Peston interviewed the housing and planning minister this morning on Peston on Sunday. His responses were centred on building more houses. Notes below.

1. 190k built last year, circa 250k/year needed.

2. Custom house building sector could contribute 60k/year with appropriate reforms.

3. Didn't challenge Peston's contention that Help to Buy increases prices. Responded that Help to Buy got "families" into their own homes. Peston didn't challenge on the implications of the debt burden.

No mention of the availability of credit on the impact to affordability.

They always quote the number of properties built as if all properties were the same, it's proper 5 year plan tractor output stuff. It's one thing to build 190k well-proportioned 3 bed semis and another to build 190k studio flats.

Yep, percentages and numbers are always used to mask the facts... there hands are tied. Help to Buy was used to sustain the todays values, as they have to offload all the new build properties.

As for the future, who knows what the next hoodwink will be ?

Once the Boomers and their children stop swapping houses, it will kick off.

Because everybody else isn't in the game.
