Andy T Posted September 15, 2017 Share Posted September 15, 2017 No experience of jap cars but VW's/VAG group with simple petrol engines from the 80's/90's /2000's have been bombproof. Wife's car is 2006 Ibiza 1.4 petrol, owned for last 8 years now 80k on clock, has only needed 2 x £25 coilpacks and 1 suspension Bush. Cheap to self service about 50 quid a year. She even mangled the rear wing in a car park years ago where the paint peeled off, has still not rusted, must be well galv'd. Underneath no rust to speak of, brake lines still look new(older VW's were not quite quite as good in this respect, but greasing the lines extended the life a lot. The small fortune is another asset bubble, soon to pop, mine is a very good one and in normal times a £20-25K car which the "expert" gave a kite flying valuation of £50-60K "for insurance purposes" Anyway it's not for sale, I bought it because I wanted it and still do. spongeh Posted September 20, 2017 Share Posted September 20, 2017 Well my choice of car is not every ones cup of tea, but they have hit rock bottom price wise and to be honest I've been able to buy low on eBay and sell for more money on the owners club forums. They've also started being featured in the classic car magazines as an up and coming model. First was a 2001 Rover 75 Connoisseur SE Auto which came with full electric leather, dual zone climate control, wood dash and 12 months MOT for £243 ... advert mentioned a failed wheel bearing which I replaced for £50, unfortunately the timing belt went so it ended up being sold as parts, but I got £900 for the parts & shell so made a little on it. Next came a 2003 MG ZT+ 180 Sport Auto - bought for £699 and if I'm honest with a little bit of work it turned into one of the best cars I've ever owned, but the 18mpg around town and less than 25mpg on my commute meant it had to go, but I managed over 9000 miles in it before I decided to sell it on for £1600 Currently running around in a Rover 75 Diesel Auto Estate which I got for £675 last year, so far I've done 17000 miles in it and its run pretty faultlessly. It's not the cheapest advertised on the site either, and doesn't attract monster VED like '06 variants. There's a silver one near my place that hasn't had the recall rear spoiler fitted (it did get the suspension upgrade though) it looks stunning.
