A related topic is timing the purchase of a usable but likely future classic car at or near the bottom of its price trajectory.

The beautiful Toyota Supra has started to appreciate in value, but you can still get a really decent one for less than a new family hatchback.

Currently for sale on the autoshite.com forum:

Skoda Felicia Diesel, MOT till March, £175

Peugeot 306 Turbodiesel, MOT till Feb, loads of new bits, £300

Fiat Doblo turbodiesel, MOT till next September, £525

...all seemingly struggling to find a buyer. There are so many good cars out there for less than the cost of 3 month's PCP payments.

These might be a handy reference point for anyone new to bangernomics worried about VED costs on older cars (given no-one wants bill shock on their shed when they get the road tax renewal notice..)

No experience of jap cars but VW's/VAG group with simple petrol engines from the 80's/90's /2000's have been bombproof. Wife's car is 2006 Ibiza 1.4 petrol, owned for last 8 years now 80k on clock, has only needed 2 x £25 coilpacks and 1 suspension Bush. Cheap to self service about 50 quid a year. She even mangled the rear wing in a car park years ago where the paint peeled off, has still not rusted, must be well galv'd. Underneath no rust to speak of, brake lines still look new(older VW's were not quite quite as good in this respect, but greasing the lines extended the life a lot. Will be keeping it until the wheels fall off.

Anyway the classic option at a low price, Integrale EVO2 bought 12 years ago for £5,000..........

Remember looking at those in the early 2000's, stunning car, but I bought a Corrado VR6 instead. Aren't they worth a small fortune now?

The small fortune is another asset bubble, soon to pop, mine is a very good one and in normal times a £20-25K car which the "expert" gave a kite flying valuation of £50-60K "for insurance purposes"

Anyway it's not for sale, I bought it because I wanted it and still do. It's one of those cars that people look at but don't assume you're a pr1ck, I even get let out into traffic :)

Well my choice of car is not every ones cup of tea, but they have hit rock bottom price wise and to be honest I've been able to buy low on eBay and sell for more money on the owners club forums. They've also started being featured in the classic car magazines as an up and coming model.

First was a 2001 Rover 75 Connoisseur SE Auto which came with full electric leather, dual zone climate control, wood dash  and 12 months MOT for £243 ... advert mentioned a failed wheel bearing which I replaced for £50, unfortunately the timing belt went so it ended up being sold as parts, but I got £900 for the parts & shell so made a little on it.

Next came a 2003 MG ZT+ 180 Sport Auto - bought for £699 and if I'm honest with a little bit of work it turned into one of the best cars I've ever owned, but the 18mpg around town and less than 25mpg on my commute meant it had to go, but I managed over 9000 miles in it before I decided to sell it on for £1600

Currently running around in a Rover 75 Diesel Auto Estate which I got for £675 last year, so far I've done 17000 miles in it and its run pretty faultlessly.

not within the limit of the thread but wondering if such motors represent some of the lowest £/hp available. It's not the cheapest advertised on the site either, and doesn't attract monster VED like '06 variants. I presume the fuel/maintenance bills are prodigious, but even then the engine is a VW iirc so assume some economising possible.

Thoughts?

I think you're on to something spongeh thats a lot of car for the ££, for most the 75 would be pricey to run as a daily however it seemz there as some equally great value 45's - best in MG ZS form apparently, here Honest John's found a cracker under 500 quid..

I'd say under £500 is a tad low -- The sweet spot appears to be in the £500-£1k range (or even just over).

There is an interesting effect that you get for cars which are just about to go out of MoT.  These split into three categories:

  • Those that they've had feedback on from a friendly garage that something major is going wrong and they should get rid.
  • It has failed an MoT and they want rid.
  • Those where they can't be bothered to get an MoT and just want gone.

Obviously you want the latter.    You can usually tell which is which based on the type of person selling.

But, even nicer, these days you can do a search and get the details if they've tried for an MoT and it has failed -- so you can have a look and if it has failed on something 'easy' (and they just want rid of the liability) then you can go in and haggle hard (as they should know that once out of MoT the vehicle will be almost unshiftable), and also, you know that if it has failed on something 'hard' (eg, I don't touch airbags), then you can dismiss it quickly.

Where can you find out MOT results dgul thats really interesting?.

My Fiat Doblo Van (ex Royal Mail) was £800 had it 18 months now,two nearly new tyres added £50 ,passed its test.I also have a Peugeot 307 2.0 on an 05 plate 100k+ miles.I bought it for £3800 7 years ago.I put new brake system on this year (everything) and new clutch,£550 cost .I look at it like this.10 weeks PCP payments.

Got to stretch your budget to a grand for a decent car. Pick of the bunch for me....

The S80 has plenty room, plenty toys, the D5 engine has lots of guts with reasonable mpg.... Just make sure you plan your journeys well, it has the turning circle of it's big brother, the FH!

Well, there's the chronyx link to start with, but a better one is https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history .

With that link you have  a record of all mot tests, and usefully it includes advisory notices on a pass, as well as reasons for a fail.  It'll also show if the car's been off the road for a while -- this isn't necessarily a problem, but if it has only just been put back on the road (recent mot etc) after a few years off the road there is a risk of rubber components going wrong soon after.  Sure, sometimes the seller has the history, but often they don't (particularly if there is something to hide), and, anyway, you don't want to go to see something when there's a problem you'd definitely not want to inherit.

I'd say you can't buy an older car without looking at that mot history first.
