When I was working for Shell I joined their fabulously ungenerous sharesave scheme (buy one get one) with option prices set by the market.

After joining the scheme for two years running I found that both options were underwater, so I cancelled the scheme and got my money out (this was when Shell shares fell from 498p to about 360p. Over the next few years I noticed that the shares only recovered to 400p and stuck there year after year.

I am amazed how long it has taken Shell to rise above this moribund figure, particularly given the inexorable rise in oil prices.

It matters WHICH oil stocks you are in.
