Thames garden bridge scrapped by Sadiq Khan

Recommended Posts

now how about building another crossing in the east end? There's not a single bridge from the blackwall tunnel to dartford FFS!

1- replace woolwich ferry with a bridge (low hanging fruit).

2- build another crossing (maybe tunnels) between belvedere and dagenham.

I wonder just what they've already spent £37.4 million on without so much as a brick being planted, let alone a tree!

And just why had the final price spiraled so much? I thought these big projects were much better managed these days - or are we back to the halcyon days of the Scottish Parliament building?

According to the wireless the planning phase has already cost £40 million.....

Genuine question, can anyone offer any offer an explanation for such an amount to have been spent on something that as far as i'm aware has never gone beyond the stage of simply being an idea.

I can see only the silvertown tunnel serving vehicular traffic... and even that has to be approached from the blackwall tunnel. A full time bridge or high capacity tunnel to the east of london city airport is needed. it would unlock so much potential in the east end.

A million people going to a million meetings submitting a million "plans" and talking cobblers about them

Same old, same old.

Stuff that doesn't get done seems to cost a every such a lot these days.

Total waste of money, pie in sky....you don't live in a city if you would prefer to live in a garden......can't make something what it isn't something you would hope and want it to be.....gimmica.;)

Well if my experience of IT projects is anything to go by this sort of front loading of costs is pretty typical. Every deadbeat Project Manager, Architect , Blue Sky Thinker and Snake Oil salesman  makes a bee line for any such enterprise at its start up phase because that is where all the goodies are located in terms of expenses, free meals, accommodation, travel etc. They hoover up all the money doing SFA so that by the time it comes to implementation there is not enough cash to buy a box of tea bags and a packet of digestives for the people who actually have to build the thing. Needless to say those who have looted the Project at start up will have moved onto their next victim long before this happens or the project is canned.

I'm going to personally hand write to the mayor and recommend building a 'Blue Elephant' bridge... I think it would be an amazing hit B)

I would also suggest that if he wishes to progress on the political landscape, I believe declaring to build a wall is a popular vote winner

& stop building affordable housing, we're going to be experiencing a mass exodus. So start forcing rises in interest rates, so the average domestic wage earners can actually experience a life of a home owner....

I have a property client in the city and walk a lot (health more than anything) and there are lots of closed off green spaces, probably the reserve of the rich and powerful.  I'd open all of these bad boys up if they want greenery.

Interesting aside, and anecdotally as it was discussed in a meeting I was privy to, but the client, an incredibly large global property company, are seeing 10% drops in the run up to Brexit and have literally no idea what could happen after, could be a low slide, could be a lift, but not much: see most of gains now having been made, and are getting out of property ownership in London.  Said yields are plummeting too.  Now concentrating on the property management side of the business.

If they ever do build a bridge that isn't a bridge then at least put some new homes on it rather than trees and flower pots.
