rantnrave
It's a Conservative Party statement rather than a Prime Ministerial one - either she is resigning or an election is being announced
Errol
May's Statement: I am speaking to you from Downing Street. This morning the British ambassador in North Korea handed the North Korean government a final note stating that unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with North Korea.

TheCountOfNowhere
Looks like she's doing the decent thing and calling ana election just before the bubble collapses so she can get 5 years before the next election. #Respect for May today. Surely the SPEND SPEND SPEND to pump up house prices and give homeowners a ''feel good factor'' would come in the (usually) long run up to an election?.... No time for that in this case? No time for that in this case? Get in quick before the collapse. They know what's coming. The voters dont seem to. They want a 5 year tenure so they cant handle the collapse and do what the **** thety like during #BrExit. best result is a hang parliament...or some hung bankers, not sure which
Riedquat
How's this going to get around the fixed term parliaments? The Conservatives call for a vote of no confidence in their own government? Unlikely. Enough cross-party support to get a sufficient number of MPs to agree to it? It would destroy Labour, they'd be mad to agree to it (not that that'll necessarily stop them), the Lib Dems haven't got enough to be relevent, and although the SNP probably wouldn't lose much it's hard to see what they'd gain. rantnrave
BTL tax changes fully kick in by 2020, which I always felt was strange timing to win over the priced out generation in time for an election. This potentially adds another couple of years though. Things could play out as many on this site hoped in 2010. Tories win an election and let house prices sink straight away in order to ride a feel good effect from the newly-housed five years later. Gidiot didn't get that memo though... Errol
This clears things up. The Tories can get their 100+ seat majority and go from there.

She should carry two thirds. If Labour oppose the vote (and they are the only ones who could affect the outcome) they would lose all credibility after already calling for an early election. In the unlikely event she doesn't get two thirds she just needs to bring forward a snap bill to repeal fixed parliaments act. She would only need a simply majority on that.. london_thirtythree
Somewhere in London, there is an Estate Agent cradling his head in his hands.. Elections tend to put a pause on the housing market - so putting a pause on top of a pause. I suppose they can hopefully look forward to a feel-good boost in June after the election. Although, thinking on, this election is going to be so one-sided, I wonder if anyone will care and maybe the impact will be negligible. rantnrave
Two choices for labour: Oppose this early election, stick with Corbyn, lose badly in 2020 and not have a shot at power again until 2025. Support this election, get hammered and boot out Corbyn, regroup for a shot at 2022 election. I think Labour MPs will support May's plans...
