Gaming laptop less than £700

Recommended Posts

So I've decided to get a gaming laptop. I'm not expecting to get the lastest games running maxed out. So what's my best option and from where ? Less than £700 is my budget.

Thanks in advance....

wait another 6 months, because AMD have got some new ryzen chips coming out with integrated graphics,

the new chips(ryzen 7 and ryzen 5) are getting belting reviews for multitasking work and completely whipping intel I7 on rendering, video compression and AutoCAD etc, The only thing they are missing at the moment is gaming-which is actually on a par with i7 with seperate graphics card.it was expected by gamers this would also be better, but AMD and the games manufacturers are making improvements and this is expected to improve considerably as the new architecture gets more widely used.

the cheap option will be to wait until august/sep for the new APU devices, they're expected to have at least  radeon R7 250X or graphics performance or higher depending on which chip you get.

if going for a cheap but competent gaming machine, these come in about half the price of comparable intel chip.(ryzen5 1600+ mobo comes in around the £300 mark)

not bad for 6 core 12 thread

Thanks for this information. An interesting development.

In response to above, I was looking at a laptop with an actual card. Everytime I decide on one, I read a review that says, don't get this one, spend a bit more, and get this one. And on it goes....

An obvious question that you've probably already answered for yourself, but does it really need to be a laptop? If not you'll get more for the same amount of money with a desktop.

Avoid anything with a GTX960M in it. If you do intend to push some polygons while gaming with the laptop and you want to get decent performance for several years then try to get something with the latest 10xx version of Nvidia cards. I don't think that waiting for the Ryzen architecture to make it to portable gaming hardware would be a good idea unless you aren't in any particular hurry. At the moment for under £700 you don't have that great a line-up to choose from but shop around and see if you can find something with a 980m on it as they are comparable to a deskop 770. HP are doing a good deal on the latest Omen with a 1050ti on board which is a pretty good deal for the money. Also check out this lot - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk  They let you configure a custom laptop build suited to your requirements. If you can afford a bit more I recently bought one of these and it is awesome - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/30021504-Medion-Erazer-X7849_2005822.html

Yup, got a few of those. I don't need a gaming laptop. However, it would be nice to play very old Steam indy games without my current i5 laptop melting the chip fan.

Thanks, I've seen this mentioned before about the 960. I understand the rationale in regards to looking ahead, it makes sense. However, I find it hard to justify paying over a grand. My car only cost what your laptop cost !

Thanks again though.

If you want to restrict the amount you spend, why not go with a desktop? I5 6500 processor, GTX1060 graphics card and bargain basement for everything else will kill a 700 quid laptop.

I think you will need to look at the screens because from what I read and see is the rubbish screens (poor resolution, viewing angles) end up in budget laptops!

Your budget is too low. I've got one of these and they're good.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-7559-GTX960-4gb-/132168386121?hash=item1ec5d98649:g:WxcAAOSwuspY9mEb

Not very good value though still. I bought a scratch and dent from Dell last year with 16gb ram, SSD and 4K screen for under 700.

I'd look at second had stuff for your budget with a 960m, otherwise you need to bump it to nearer 1k.

This is the only thing new I can find that's any good, 2gb 960m lets it down, but realistically it's a low powered card so won't be running the high resolutions that require the 4gb version:

you can get topcashback too sometimes. It tracked for me.

+1 for dell outlet.  But keep in mind that the prices don't include vat until checkout.  Also worth haggling with Dell if you can be bothered, either before or after ( if something is not quite as described etc) for further discount/ refund
