What were they thinking? Naff and trivializing? Wow, just wow.

The problem, I imagine, is that marketing depts are stuffed full of people who have no intuition, just metrics. Faith in big data, innit? It's the same sort of thing that led Youtube to display ads for kibbutz vacations next to anti-semitic vids.

Doubtless the dept's defense was "but it's got Kendall Jenner in it. Her Facebook ranking blah, blah ..."

Agreed. In addition my intuition is that the same people voicing offence (and I'm sure very genuinely) also lap up the cult of celebrity in other guises.
